Obituary of Evelyn Enns

EVELYN ENNS (Nee LOEWEN) It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Evelyn Ratzlaff Enns (nee Loewen) on August 13, 2008 at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg. She will be deeply missed by her husband, George H. Enns, her children Kenneth (Lesley), Stanley (Maureen Benoit) and Eleanor MacDougall (Grant), and grandchildren David, Gregory, Melanie, Amelia, William and Charlotte. Also surviving are 2 sisters: Matilda Friesen (Erwin), Steinbach, Rachel Reimer (Johnny), Dallas, Oregon, 6 brothers: Dave (Elvina) and Bob (Mary), Steinbach, Glenn, Vietnam, Ray (Anne), Burnaby, LaVern (Marni) Qualicum Beach, B.C., Waldy (Gloria), Kenora, and by the extended Enns family. She was predeceased by her parents Helena Ratzlaff Loewen and Abraham T. Loewen, step-mother Elizabeth Loewen, brothers Levi, Henry, Leslie and brother-in-law Rev. Jake Hiebert, and her infant daughter Evelyn Georgina. Evelyn was born on June 14, 1922 in Steinbach, Manitoba, and spent most of her early life there, with several years in Jansen, Nebraska. She completed her education in Steinbach and Winnipeg. Mom loved singing and spent many hours singing with her family and in choirs and trios. As a young woman, Evelyn courageously journeyed by canoe to Oxford House to teach school. Evelyn and George were married in 1947 and together raised their family facing the challenges life gave them. Mom spent 25 years volunteering for the Red Cross, and many years for the New Democratic Party. Evelyn enjoyed her many hobbies, and was known for her talent in knitting, needlepoint, canning, baking, crossword puzzles (and even bowling). Her brown buns and tomato juice were famous within the family. Family dinners with her six grandchildren brought her special joy. We all loved Mom for the kind and loving person she was. She lived her strong Mennonite Christian faith, in later years attending the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church. Evelyn’s health declined in recent years. She spent the last year and a half at the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, where she was cared for with dignity and compassion. We would like to thank the staff there for their wonderful care, and Mom’s wonderful family and friends for their love and support over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba at 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, R3L 0K6 The Funeral Service was held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach on Saturday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jake Bergen officiating. Interment took place at Memorial Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends was held Sunday, August 17 at 2:30 p.m. at Kildonan Community Church, Winnipeg.
