Obituary of Nick Machnee

NICK MACHNEE On Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Vita Personal Care Home, Nick Machnee passed away at the age of 93. Nick was born in Gardenton, MB on December 21, 1915. He grew up on the family farm, farming with his father. In 1943 he married Pauline Kozak and they continued farming until their retirement in 1982 when they moved to Gardenton. Nick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pauline (Kozak), sons Donald (Diane) Machnee, Gerald (Carol) Machnee, and daughter Iris (Paul) Demianiw; six grandchildren: Jennifer & Janice (Mike) Machnee, Matthew (Keiko) & Michael Machnee, Karen & Steven Demianiw. Also surviving Nick are his sisters-in-law Eleanore McKnee of Florida, Mary Rybuck of Winnipeg, Nettie Tofan of Victoria, BC, Olga Kozak of Tolstoi, MB. He was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Paraska Machnee, brothers and sisters Jake (Helen), Katherine (John) Kozak, Nastasia (Dmytro) Tanchak and Sidor. Also half brothers and sisters George, Mihay, Anna, Lena, Mary, Bill, Harry, Peter, Melvin, Katherine, Wasylena, and Emmanuel. Nick had an ear for music. He starting to play at an early age of 10. He played violin, guitar, mouth organ and cymbaly. He played at surrounding dances and weddings. He was a life member of the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, serving on the church committee and as an elder. He was very active in the restoration of the historic St. Michael’s church, joining in the work as well as photographing the process. He also served as trustee on the school board. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vita Personal Care home for the wonderful care of Nick the past nine months. Prayers will be held Monday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 20, at 10:30 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with Very Reverend Father Miron Pozniak officiating. Lunch to follow service. Interment at the Historical St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Gardenton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Historical Church, Box 20, Gardenton, MB R0A 0M0.
