Surrounded by his family, Abram (Abe D.) Derksen of Grunthal passed into his Saviour’s arms on January 21, 2009 at Menno Home for the Aged in Grunthal at the age of 72 years. He is survived by his wife SusieAnn (nee Hiebert), six sons: Abe (Gloria), Dave, John (Shannon), Dennis (Joanne), James (Tammy), Alvin (Verna), one daughter Karen (Garry) Slywchuk, 24 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters, along with a large extended family. Dad was born in Altona on November 26, 1936. He moved to the Grunthal area with his parents when he was 12 years old, and has resided there ever since. On August 10, 1958, Dad and Mom were married. Shortly after, they bought a farm and some dairy cows. Dad’s strong work ethic served him well as he spent the next 40 years raising his family and building up the farm. Dad received Jesus as his personal Saviour in the spring of 1958 and shortly after, was baptized in the Grunthal CMC upon confession of his faith. He was a member there all his life. He served in many positions, including 18 years as a deacon. We will remember Dad first and foremost for his legacy of faith. He was a man of faith and prayer with an evangelist’s heart. He loved to study his Bible. He will also be remembered for his generosity, work ethic and honesty. He enjoyed cattle, gardening and nature; but especially loved his family. The family would like to thank the staff at Menno Home for their patient and attentive care for Dad in the last 2½ years. The funeral Service was held January 26 at the Grunthal Bergthaler Church, with interment at the Grunthal Cemetery.
