Obituary of Robert David Major

Robert (Bob) Major It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) David Major into the arms of Christ, peacefully, surrounded by family at his home on Thursday, May 25, 2006 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born on January 29, 1933 in Kenora, Ontario to brighten a cold day for Edward and Mary Major and join his older brother James (Jim) to complete their family. The family moved shortly afterward to Dryden where Bob grew to love the outdoors and begin close friendships that would prove to last a lifetime. After 16 years, the family moved to Winnipeg where he attended high school at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. After leaving High School, Bob struck out for the West Coast and worked in the lumbering camps for a couple of seasons before starting what would become a 37 year career with Manitoba Hydro. Bob married Jean Murray August 8, 1958 and came to settle in Steinbach in 1964 where they shared a love of community service through the Steinbach Kinsmen and Kinette Club, Canadian Legion and the United Church. Bob was also committed to The Society for Manitobans with Disabilities and enjoyed his many years involved with Schmokey Night. Bob is greatly missed by Jean his loving wife of 47 years and their children Kent and wife Dianne Theoret-Major their children Emma and Kyle of Georgetown, Ontario; Grant and wife Luba Bilun-Major and children Alexander and Quinn of Steinbach, Manitoba; and Lianne Boudreau (nee Major) her partner Andre Rancourt and children Scott and Stephanie of Inuvik, NWT. He is also mourned by his brother Jim (Myrna), many friends and extended family. Bob is predeceased by his parents Edward and Mary. A service will be held Monday, May 29th 2:00 pm at the United Church, 541 Main Street, Steinbach, Manitoba. The family wishes to thank Larry Hirst, Chaplin Bethesda Hospital, Rev. Steven Johann, United Church, Dr. C.F. DeWitt, Dr. D. Horne and, Dr. D. Reimer, the nurses of Steinbach Bethesda Hospital and nurses and attendants of Home Care for their compassion. Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to South Eastman Palliative Care, Box 88; St. Pierre, MB R0A 1V0 and the Winnipeg Humane Society, 5 Kent Street; Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3.
