Mary Barkman Mary Barkman was born on March 18, 1924, in the R.M. of Morris to David T. and Justina Kroeker. After her mother’s death in 1928, Mary, then aged 4 years, was taken in and given a new home by Jacob & Maria Kornelsen of Kleefeld. In February of 1950, together with her family she moved to Mexico, where she met Peter Barkman, and the two married on Dec. 9, 1952. In the late ‘50s Peter and Mary moved to Canada and settled in the Riverton area and later to Blumenort. A son, Johnny was born to them on Aug. 4, 1960, and on Dec. 14, 1991, at the age of 31 years, he passed away. Peter & Mary remained in Blumenort as long as health permitted, and in 2002, Mary was admitted to Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, and shortly thereafter, Peter moved into Woodhaven Manor, to be near his wife. On Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at the age of 82 years, Mary passed away at the Rest Haven Nursing Home. She is survived by her husband and companion, Peter, with whom she shared over 52 years. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2006, 2:00 pm at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, with interment to follow in the Blumenort EMC Cemetery. Friends may pay their last respects at the Chapel prior to the Service.
