Obituary of John K. Fast

On Tuesday, May 30, 2000 our dear husband, father, grandfather, son and brother passed away peacefully and quietly, after battling cancer for the past four years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Elma, 3 daughters; Jerlene and husband Wes Dueck, Glenda and husband John Dyck, Rose and husband Dennis Reimer, and one son, Kent and wife Susan, as well as 10 grandchildren, his step-mother Mary Fast, 2 brothers, and 5 sisters. He was predeceased by his mother Maria (Kornelsen) Fast in 1945, his father John D. Fast in 1990, his sister Susan in 1970, 2 infant brothers and 2 infant sisters. John was born and raised in the Kleefeld area. He spent most of his working years in the Kleefeld area working in various industries including dairy, cheese making, carpentry, manufacturing, construction and food services. John and Elma owned and operated Cloverfield Bee Supplies Ltd. in Kleefeld for over twenty years, establishing their company as one of the biggest and best in Canada in that industry. Later, John and Elma owned and operated Alma's Kitchen, a local restaurant with a widespread reputation for great food and hospitality. The last seven years John served as Food Services Manager at Camp Arnes, again with Elma working at his side and supporting him in all he did. John spent twelve years on council of the Rural Municipality of Hanover representing the Kleefeld area, and serving as Finance Chair for many of those years. He served as a director on the Bethesda Hospital Board for eight years, served on the Canadian Honey Council Board for eight years, helped to spearhead the drives to build a new park and a new school in Kleefeld, was a committed member of the Gideon Bible Society for 20 years, and served on numerous boards and committees with his church. John was a dedicated and faithful husband for over 41 years, a loving and caring father and grandfather, a dear friend, mentor and companion. John's faith in God was, and continues to be, a source of inspiration for all of us. Despite his rapidly failing health over the past few months John's faith in God and his concern for the spiritual well-being of his family, friends, and everyone he met, continued to grow stronger and stronger. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Palliative Care nurses at the Bethesda Hospital for their gentle loving care. Funeral services were held at the Kleefeld Evangelical Mennonite Church on Saturday, June 3, 2000, with internment at the church cemetery. Donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the John and Elma Fast Camp Arnes Campership Fund, c/o Mennonite Foundation of Canada, 12 - 1325 Markham Rd, Wpg, MB, R3T 4J6. You are truly loved. We will miss you.
