Obituary of Agnes Friesen

Our mother Aganetha Friesen was born to Frank and Agatha Sawatzky (nee Wiebe) in the Reichenbach area in the R.M. of Hanover on March 28, 1903 and moved with her parents some years later to Altona and spent her school years in Altona. After finishing her education, she worked at the Peter Hildebrands near Sommerfeld. Mother was baptized on the confession of her faith in the Sommerfelder Church in Sommerfeld by the late Bishop Abram Doerksen, on May 15, 1921. She married our father Peter W. Friesen the same year on November 1. Mom and Dad farmed in the St. Joseph area for 27 years. They raised 2 sons and 2 daughters. In the fall of 1948 they moved to the Silberfeld/New Bothwell area and continued farming until 1957. In the fall of 1957 they moved to Steinbach and worked at the Blumenort killing plant for a few years. Father died January 14, 1972. Mother stayed in her house in Steinbach until June 1977. She then took up residence in the Grunthal units. Mother had her first stroke September 29, 1993 and was hospitalized for a while, but then returned to her apartment. On May 7, 1994 she had another stroke, and again regained her strength and mobility to the point where, with a little home-care, she could carry on and stay in her apartment. In January 1995 mother had another stroke. In April of that same year she took up residence in the Grunthal Menno Home where she resided until the time of her death. Mother suffered a cardiac arrest on February 27 and passed on to glory March 16 at 10:10 a.m. at the age of 96 years, 11 months, and 18 days. Mother was predeceased by her beloved husband Peter in 1972, daughter-n-law Dorothy Friesen, son-in-law Cornie Hildebrand, grandson Robert Friesen, and great grandson Christipher Ginter. She leaves to mourn two sons, two daughters, and their spouses: Peter of Penticton, B.C. Agatha (Mrs. Cornie Hildebrand) of Steinbach, Teana (Mrs. Cornelius Ginter) of Winnipeg, and Frank (Judy) of Humboldt, SK; 20 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 15 great, great grandchildren. We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but are ever looking forward to the blessed hope of the resurrection., when the dead in Christ shall be raised up together and so we shall meet Him in the air. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Grunthal Menno Home nursing staff for the tender loving care you gave to our mother during the years she resided at the home, and especially for the last two weeks. Thank you so much. Funeral services were held at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Monday, March 20, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Abe Funk and Cornie Wiebe officiating.
