Obituary of Richard D. Dyck

Richard Diedrich Dyck, age 91, of Winnipeg, MB, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019, at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB. Lover of life. Ready to die, but not anxious to leave. Not a saint, but sure that angels await. Confident in his faith. Certain of grace. Gone to be with Jesus, his beloved wife, Ruth, and many others gone on before. Predeceased by Ruth (Braun), parents, Abram I. Dyck and Elizabeth (Unrau) Dyck, sisters and brothers and their spouses, Ruth’s parents and many of her extended family. Survived by siblings: Ike (Tina) Dyck, Betty Reimer, Tina Harms, Bill (Doris) Dyck, sisters-in-law Betty (Dick) Friesen, Rose (Charles) Friesen, Jessie Braun, Gertie Braun, brother-in-law Henry Janzen. Dad to children: Don (Pearl), Dennis (Cheryl), Dan (Laura), Bonnie, Roxy (Brian). Grandpa to 13 grandchildren plus their partners, and three great-grandchildren – none of whom he could see often enough. Friend to the many he would meet for breakfast, coffee, and conversation in his long-time neighbourhood of North Kildonan. Baptized June 6, 1949, Chortitzer Church, Grunthal, MB. Strived to love God, follow Jesus, and treat others by the Golden Rule, and love his family. Readily acknowledged his flaws. Constant seeker of forgiveness. Memorizer of scripture. Occasional itinerant preacher. Raised on family farms near Plum Coulee and Grunthal, MB. Storyteller. Believer in hard work and education. Generosity-empowered dollar stretcher. Joker and occasional teaser. Hired hand to many farmers in his youth. Lumberjack, mechanic, plasterer, builder, tinkerer, inventor, handy-man, custodian in the Winnipeg School Division, and Stationary Engineer, 4th Class. In his own words, “Jack of all trades, Master of none.” Together with Ruth, caregiver to many foster and daycare children who received love, food, and shelter from their kind hearts. Always ready to help others as best he could. Thank you to everyone able to commemorate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations graciously received by Bethania Personal Care Home, Winnipeg Convalescent Home, or Calvary Temple, in memory of Richard. The funeral service will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with a viewing one hour prior to the service.
