Obituary of Anna Reimer

“Annie” Anna Wieler Peters Reimer (she liked and wanted them all), passed peacefully to her Great Reward on Monday, October 3, 2019, at the age of 99 years, 23 days. Dad always predicted she’d live to be 100 because of great genes and a somewhat stubborn resolve; she fell just short, but nevertheless completed her race well and as intended.

Mom was born on September 10, 1920, the eldest child of Jacob H. (Reeve) and Maria (Wieler) Peters, a family that numbered 10. It’s been rumored that she cooked her first meal before her sister Tina was born, two years later! Because she was the eldest of a large family, she thought of herself as a second mom to her siblings and throughout life, loved them unconditionally and in various ways cared for them all. While many of her siblings and in-laws were in various forms of ministry, she was in her own way the ultimate missionary. Annie was the consummate hostess, sibling, in-law, aunt, mom, grandma and recently great-grandmother. She was an amazing cook and baker; chocolate layer cake with banana filling and chocolate icing, cut into sixteen unequal pieces in a way that none of us have been able to replicate, brown bread, white buns to die for and angel food cakes that rose as high as her oven would allow. Her meals were legendary, not only in quality but in quantity, with multiple main courses; just in case someone didn’t like the first two choices, there was usually a third! This was one of her missions.

Mom was a woman of very strong faith. She and dad were founding members of Emmanuel Evangelical Free Church, where she served in countless ways, from teaching kids to hosting visiting speakers and missionaries to filling whatever gap needed to be filled. This was one of her missions.

She was also a very caring and giving person. Because of various situations on both sides of our family, her nephews and nieces were always welcome to stay over, for a few days or a few weeks if needed. In spite of being a small family, we always felt like we had a large family. This was one of her missions.

Then came grandkids; now she could truly shine! Mike came first, and with all his special needs, nothing she did was too good for him; nothing she gave was too much; no time spent with him was too great. Then came Jeff, Greg and Dan. She truly became a second mom to these three, and again, no time or effort was too much; it’s who she was; it’s what she did; it’s what she was made for. This was one of her missions.

The last number of years, beginning when dad passed, were difficult for her. It seemed she lost some purpose along with her life partner. As dementia took over, she became frustrated and confused at times, and yet was always gracious to visitors and to us. As conversations with her became repetitive, we still had lots of laughs at all the old jokes, and she usually had a bright smile when she saw us walk in the door.

Anna is survived by two sons, Lou (Joyce) and Dwight, four grandsons Mike, Jeff, Greg and Dan (Janice), and one great-granddaughter Symairah. She is survived by one brother Jake (Rose) and one sister Ellen (Ed) Penner, sisters-in-law Linda, Shirley and Anne, and two step-sisters Leona and Louella, as well as Reimer sisters-in-law Lydia, Verna, Amanda, Evie, and brothers-in-law Harry and Henry.

She was predeceased by her parents Jacob H. and Maria Peters, stepmother Tina, brothers Henry, Edmar, Ert, Gil and sisters Tina, Aurelia and Marie.

A huge thanks to staff at Vita Personal Care Home and Rest Haven Personal Care Home for taking care of Annie for the past four years, as well as to Susan Schalla for being such a faithful friend.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

Burial will be held prior to the service.

Donations in memory of Anna may be made to Envision Community Centre, Steinbach, MB.
