Obituary of Susanna Hiebert

Peacefully on Good Friday, April 2, 1999, at the Altona Hospital, our mother, Susanna Hiebert, age 74, of Altona, formerly of Steinbach, MB. went to her heavenly home. In the last years she has suffered from a variety of illnesses, the most severe and noticeable being, Arthritic Gout. Susanna was born to Frank and Aganatha Hiebert on April 25, 1924, the oldest of 9 children. They lived in Grunthal during her childhood years. In 1943 she fell in love and married a handsome farmer, Diedrich A. Hiebert, of New Bothwell, who was a young widower with 3 children. Together they had 7 more children. Mom’s hands were never idle. She was kept busy with farm and household duties as well as the care and nurturing of a large family. During this time Mom found great personal satisfaction out of doors. She loved to spend time working in her garden and planting trees and more than anything she loved to watch the birds. It was during this time that Mom came to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. John Chapter 14 was very special to her. Over time the children grew up, married and had children of their own. In 1967 Mom & Dad moved to Steinbach where Mom could enjoy all the modern conveniences. Now that she had more time on her hands, she was able to take up crocheting and various other crafts. Mom & Dad enjoyed their retirement years surrounded by loving friends and family. Dad passed away April 14, 1992. After Dad passed away Mom found it difficult to look after the house, so she decided to sell it and move to Fernwood Place She enjoyed a few good years there. While in Steinbach, Mom got sick on January 27, 1998. The doctor said that she had little hope, but she recovered enough to move to the Ebenezer Nursing Home in Altona, where she received excellent care. Her last few months were more enjoyable for her because of the eye surgery she underwent in the fall. She leaves to mourn her passing, six daughters: Linda (John) Dueck, Winnipeg; Margaret (George) Goertsen, Steinbach; Nettie (Wayne) Harris, Edmonton; Anne (Henry) Banman, Edmonton; Mary (Alex) Jones, Altona; and Kathy (Albert) Fast, Devon AB. Three sons: Martin, Winnipeg; Peter (Marilyn), Edmonton; John (Joanne), Dawson Creek. B.C. Daughter-in-law Erna Hiebert, Steinbach, 28 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Also surviving her are 3 sisters: Nettie (John) Hamm, Katherine (Abe) Thiessen and Anne (Lem) Pelley. 2 brothers: Henry (Valerie) and Peter (Bertha), 2 sisters-in-laws: Eva Hiebert and Margaret Hiebert and 1 brother-in-law Isaac Warkentin. She was predeceased by her husband Diedrich 1992 son Dick 1973, grandson Bryan 1977, her parents and 3 brothers. Throughout her life Mom always remained committed to her family and her home. Even in her last years she continued to carry this concern. Mom will always be remembered by her gentle spirit, and, no matter what she suffered, for never complaining. Mom’s favorite saying was “give me the roses while I live.” The funeral service was held on Tuesday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the Steinbach CMC Church with Pastors Allen Kehler and Jake Froese officiating. Interment took place at the Osterwick South Cemetery, New Bothwell. MB. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to The Gideons Bible Plan.
