Obituary of Jacob B. Reimer

Dad was born August 20th, 1919, to Jacob and Margaret Reimer in Heuboden, MB, where he grew up on the farm. He received his schooling in the Seaton School. He received the Lord Jesus as his Saviour and was baptized on June 30th, 1940 in the Kleine Gemeinde Church in Kleefeld. Dad enjoyed swimming and skating. His good swimming ability helped him on two occasions to save the lives of two young men. Dad was with a group of young men who bummed the freight train to Alberta in 1939 to help with the harvesting. Later when war broke out, he worked as a C.O. at Clear Lake. This was where he rescued one of his friends from drowning. He talked about this often, and expressed the fact that the young man he saved had not been a Christian at the time. That had been a big concern to him. He was also quick to say that he had not saved the man by himself, but that together as a team of men they had done it, and he thanked God for the opportunity to save this young man from drowning. On December 14th, 1941, he married Annie Friesen. God blessed Mom and Dad with 8 sons and 6 daughters. In December of 1950, Mom and Dad, with their young family of 6 children moved to Mexico. It was a challenge for Dad to provide for a growing family, especially when rain was scarce first three years in Mexico. He did some carpentry work and other jobs to keep us all fed. He was ready to pack up his family and move back to Canada when his father got sick and died of leukemia in the summer of 1954. Then the rain started to come and crops grew and Dad was able to pay off his debts. So they stayed and enjoyed 53 years of farming in Mexico. Here, he also enjoyed serving on different committees, like Vorsteher (Colony business administration), Brandordnung (Colony fire insurance) and as an undertaker. When Mom and Dad’s health began to deteriorate and they needed more care, they moved to Blumenort, MB in September 2003. They lived in Oakwood Place for 2 ½ years till Mom was hospitalized in February 2006. Later Dad joined her there at the hospital, where they spent the last 1 ½ months of their married life, until Mom passed away on April 25th, 2006. Dad stayed in the hospital, waiting for a room to open up in a nursing home. He moved to Maplewood Manor on September 29th, 2006, where he stayed till a room opened up at the Rest Haven Nursing Home. He moved to Rest Haven on January 9th, 2007, where he stayed till his death on March 1st, 2007. Dad is lovingly remembered by his family and survived by all his children. Mourning his passing are Jeannie (Clarence) Dueck of Costa Rica, Rose (Willie) Penner of Steinbach, Lawrence (Agnes) of Mexico/Blumenort, Peter (Agatha) of Blumenort, John (Sara) of Blumenort, Gordon (Esther) of Steinbach, Mary Anne (Henry) Unger of Alberta, Lorna (Ken) Penner of Landmark, Frank (Tina) of Blumenort, Ervin (Margaret) of Steinbach, Nettie Wall of Mexico, Milton (Leona) of Mexico, Clara (Larry) Loewen of Texas, Cornie (Elvira) of Mexico, and also 61 grandchildren and 109 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife (Annie), his parents, four brothers, and 3 sons-in-law, Diedrich Friesen, Gerhard Rempel, and Henry Wall, as well as grandchildren Wilbert Friesen, Alfred Reimer, Loreen Unger, Theodor Reimer and several in infancy.
