Obituary of Nettie Froese

Nettie Froese, (née Schellenberg) passed away quietly and peacefully at Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, MB., on Thursday, October 17, 2019, at the age of 86. She waited patiently to be called to her heavenly home and now her life journey is complete. Left to cherish her memory are her children; Rick (Bonny) Friesen and their children, Patrick, Julia and Katelyn; Marilyn (Kevin) Pankratz, son Blake (Tara) and great grandson, Brantley; Reg (Pauline) Friesen and their children Colby, Reagan and Faith. She is also survived by sisters; Mary Mallard, Anne (Pete) Blatz, Teena Rempel, Helen Kehler, Eva Unger, Sue (Ron) Kroeker; Jake L. and Tina Friesen, Tina Hildebrand and extended family from the Friesen, Froese and Schellenberg families. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Peter L Friesen in 1980, her son Lloyd in 1990 and her second husband, Jake Froese in 2009, four brothers, one sister and other extended family. Nettie was born on January 17th, 1933, in Chihuahua, Mexico, to Jacob and Maria Schellenberg. Her family moved from Cuauhtémoc, Mexico to Manitoba on June 6, 1937, and resided in the Grunthal area where Jacob was a Pastor. She was baptized upon confession of her faith to the Chortitzer Mennonite Gemeinde on May 25, 1953. Nettie married Peter L Friesen on March 14, 1954, and together they made a home and started farming in the Niverville area. Peter and Nettie had four children and shared 26 great years together. On June 11, 1988, she married Jake Froese and had another wonderful 21 years of marriage with him living in Winnipeg. After Jake passed away, Nettie moved to Steinbach to be closer to her family and lived there till her passing. Nettie was fantastic homemaker and later an accomplished florist. Her role as farm wife was incredibly valuable and made the farm and family life with Peter thrive. Camping at Falcon Lake with Peter and the kids were memories that she held dear to her heart. All the laughs and memories with her sisters and brothers of those times stayed with her till the last years. After Peter died, she decided to go to school and become a florist. She learnt to drive in Winnipeg and went on to complete her course and work as a florist in Steinbach and Winnipeg. As a florist she was creative and enjoyed helping people with flowers and would go the extra mile to make their events special. She was dedicated and loved her job, even giving up a number of winter holidays to Panama City Florida to stay working. She enjoyed many winters in Panama City with Jake and made many new friends there. Playing shuffleboard was a favorite pass time and she always had a new story to tell when she came home from vacation that year. Nettie was an awesome cook and her kids and grandkids needed no persuasion to come for suppers to her house or the trailer at Lilac for the annual wareneki, schmaundt fat and farmer sausage/ham feast with her delicious rhubarb sauce. When grandchildren arrived the yearly trip to Grand Forks C’mon Inn was a highlight in her life. She couldn’t get enough of this family time together, spending time surrounded by her whole family. This was a family tradition for over 20 years and only ended once dementia made it too difficult for her to travel that distance. During the last years in Steinbach she lived in the Bridge Park Manor and lastly in Rest Haven Nursing Home. She had special care during these years by Eva Penner who took her grocery shopping and could easily be persuaded by Nettie to stop for coffee and a cinnamon bun. The Silver Lining Care Team; Regina Penner, Eileen Funk, Annie Penner and Esther Reimer who dedicated the last 3 ½ years to taking care of Nettie before and even after she lived in Rest Haven. Curling her hair, giving her manicures, taking her for walks, reading, puzzling, helping her win at bingo and socializing with her made her so very happy. Lastly, Eva and the late Tony Unger who helped Nettie whenever needed, took her on outings and visited her faithfully all the time, usually with a special baked treat for Nettie. All of you filled Nettie’s life with compassion and caring and she told us often how much she truly loved you all. As a family we cannot say Thank-You enough for making Nettie’s life bright, happy and fulfilled. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with a reception to follow. A private immediate family burial will take place after the funeral in Niverville. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Haven Group Foundation (In cheque memo line: Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Ave, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1K7. The family would like to thank Dr. Porath for her care of Nettie and the wonderful caring staff at Rest Haven Nursing Home. Nettie always had a smile on her face because of the exceptional care she received from everyone who worked at Rest Haven.
