Obituary of Peter A. Hiebert

Peter A. Hiebert of Steinbach, MB passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday, April 23, 2001 at the age of 80. Peter was born July 1, 1920 on his family’s farm near Rosenfeld, MB. He worked on the farm until World War II broke out at which time he chose to be a Conscientious Objector. Following the war he attended Winkler Bible Institute and later graduated from Normal School after which he began his teaching career. He spent most of his 33-year career in Steinbach teaching Grade 6, Special Ed, and Woodworking. Peter had a real heart for his students and enjoyed preparing lessons, finding new ways to motivate his students, and planning interesting projects for the classroom. As children we enjoyed accompanying Dad to his workshop at Woodlawn School on Saturdays while he prepared the next week’s project. He retired in 1984. He soon developed a bit of a reputation with the neighbours who would jokingly ask, “What project is Peter working on now?” Whether it was working on a project around the house and yard or building something with his children or later with his grandchildren, Peter was always busy enjoying life. Dad never lost his thirst for new adventures and experiences. Peter was an active member of the Steinbach E. M. Church. Even when he could no longer attend church regularly he enjoyed listening to the live broadcasts and taped services. He prayed faithfully for his family and demonstrated a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ. At the age of 36 he met Martha Reimer of Blumenort and knew this was the woman for him. They were married on July 8, 1956 in the Blumenort EM Church and enjoyed almost 45 years of marriage. They were blessed with 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 4 grandchildren. Peter is survived by his wife Martha; children Randy (Sieglinde) of Riverton, Dwight of Winnipeg, Glenn (Shawna) of Steinbach, Rhonda (Tony Wolfe) of Steinbach; and grandchildren Jeremy, Mathew, Alexandra, and Megan. He is also survived by his brothers Henry of Morden, Dave (Anne) of Edmonton, Abe (Verna) of Winnipeg, Ben (Esther) of Winnipeg, Ernest (Elma) of Gainsville, Florida, and sister Erna (Ed Doell) of Altona. Peter was predeceased by sister-in-law Hettie Hiebert. The funeral service will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 420 Main St., Steinbach, MB Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Wednesday, 7 – 7:30 p.m. with devotional to follow and 1 hour prior to the service.
