Obituary of Shirley Peters

Shirley Peters (nee Sawatzky) escaped the unrelenting grip of Alzheimer’s Disease and went to heaven to join her husband and her daughter on December 6, 2019. While we mourn her death, we take comfort in the knowledge that Ert will be welcoming her with open arms to her eternal home in heaven.

Shirley was born in Steinbach, Manitoba on February 19, 1933. She grew up with her parents and two sisters. Her father worked in the construction industry, and as a result, the family occasionally relocated from job site to job site, with Winnipeg and Steinbach being their home base.

Shirley became a Christian as a young child. Shirley was baptized in 1950 and became a member of the Cornerstone Bible Church. She was a woman of great conviction and marrying a non-Christian was not an option. After a seven-year courtship, Shirley married her soul mate, Ert W. Peters on July 22, 1955. She had insisted that Ert become a Christian before she would even consider getting married. Ert and Shirley had a loving and supportive marriage. Shirley always cherished her role as wife and mother. She and Ert began their family in 1960 with the birth of their firstborn daughter, Sheryl D’Anne. In 1965 their family was completed with the birth of their daughter, Gaylyn Joanne. Family time at home or at the lake was something that Shirley always treasured. Sadly, Shirley and the family were devastated with the tragic and untimely passing of their daughter Gaylyn when she was only 18 years old.

Shirley’s earliest employment experience was working for her dad in the office. After marriage she devoted her time mostly to raising her family and making sure that her family’s needs were met. She held a couple of secretary positions in addition to helping with the accounting for Ert’s business. Shirley also was a very accomplished seamstress, working for Ray’s Interiors and sewing beautiful, custom-designed wedding dresses in her home sewing business.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband of sixty three years, Ert Peters and her precious daughter Gaylyn, her parents Frank W. and Anne Sawatzky, and her brother Frank Wayne Sawatzky as an infant. She is survived by her daughter Sherri and her husband Wayne Sutter, her sister Joanne and Jack Boyd and their family, and her sister Zoe Port.

The funeral service to celebrate Shirley’s life will be held on Friday, December 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. with a private burial before the service.

The family would like to thank the staff of Resthaven/Cedarwood for the excellent and compassionate care they provided to Shirley. Also, a special thank you to Aldyth Toews, one of Shirley’s oldest and dearest friends who ensured she had whatever she needed, especially during the last days.
