Obituary of Herman Funk

Herman B. Funk, 79 years of Zhoda, MB., passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, December 31, 2019, at 9:40 AM at Bethesda Regional Health Centre, Steinbach, MB.

Dad is survived by his beloved wife Helena (Dueck), two daughters Yvonne & Edward Penner, Joyce & David Penner; five sons: Norman & Ivy, Dennis & Linda, Darryl & Beverly, Mark & Jennifer, Paul & Marlene; 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, two brothers David & Marlene, William; three sisters Agatha & Peter Unrau, Katherine & Otto Winkler, Susi & Gary Cullum along with numerous nieces and nephews as well as 10 in-laws and their families.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Abraham & Agatha Funk, parents in-law Jacob & Agatha Dueck, seven brothers, two brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws.

Dad was born on April 23, 1940 at Steinbach Hospital to Abraham & Agatha Funk. He grew up in Barkfield, Manitoba. Dad married mom, the love of his life on September 6, 1959, at Niverville Chortizer Church. Together they raised seven children and lived in numerous places between Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.

Dad accepted Jesus as his Savior at the age of 14 and was baptized upon his confession of faith years later.

Dad having many different endeavors throughout his life: installing hardwood flooring, driving local & long-distance trucking (which included the Alaskan highway), farming, remodeling homes & he had a passion for preaching the gospel. Dad would preach with boldness and he shared the gospel everywhere he went.

Dad had a love for music. He loved when his grandchildren would sing songs of worship to his Lord and Savior. Dad had an ear for music, and it didn’t take him long to play the harmonica, accordion & guitar.

Dad and mom spent some time traveling in their later years. They would vacation in Texas and Florida and twice they travelled to Israel.

Some of Dad’s favorite Bible Verses are found in: Psalms 103 & 91.

Dad’s most recent vision/mission project was planting a church in Zhoda, MB. The property for this project was donated and is in the development stages. Donations can be made to “Zhoda New Life Fellowship”.

A big thank you to the staff at Bethesda Regional Health Centre for their care and compassion to our dad, mom and our families.

A Come & Go Visitation will be held on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. 

The Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB.

Burial will take place at Heritage Cemetery prior to the service.
