Obituary of Helen Wohlgemuth

Helen Friesen Wohlgemuth was born to Peter I. and Anna Eidse Friesen on July 5, 1917 at the home farm in Greenland, the youngest of 9 children. She peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020, reaching the age of 102 years.

Mom grew up on the family farm in Greenland and went to the Montezuma School, half a mile from home. She gave her heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ as a young girl. She took her faith seriously and was faithful to God to the end.

She enjoyed filling a spot in caring for her nieces and nephews in her teens and early twenties. She married our Dad, Walter Wohlgemuth, on August 15, 1945 at the Greenland Church. They established their home in the Greenland Community, living in a few different places till they bought their own farm west of Greenland Church, where they stayed for 31 years and raised their family. They moved to a retirement acreage in 1982 and continued farming with their youngest son. In 1993, they, together with their oldest daughter, Mary Lou, bought a house in Steinbach. Dad passed away in 2005 and Mom and Mary Lou continued living in the home in Steinbach until 2014, when she went to live in the Maplewood Manor. She was lovingly cared for in the Manor until her passing. We want to thank the Maplewood Manor staff for their loving care of Mom in the last years of her life.

Mom will be especially remembered for her love of singing, which she exercised all through her life in singing with family and later in the Manor. She was often heard singing songs by book or from memory. It often amazed the listeners how many songs she knew from memory.

Mom will also be remembered for her love of the outside, working in the garden and supplying many with raspberries and strawberries through the years. We as children really appreciate the effort she went to in supplying our needs in out growing up years. One of her last comments in the Manor, after having the staff sing a few songs to her, was “What can I do for you?” This sums up her life of serving.

We also appreciate that in the last few years, she had a greater assurance of salvation. Earlier, she often wondered if it would do, but now she could rest in salvation that Jesus bought for her.

She leaves to mourn her children: Mary Lou of Steinbach, Wilbert and Lydia of Beausejour, Susan and Ivan Nolt of Whitemouth, Glenn and Helen of Eden, and Floyd and Myrna of Centreville, NB.; 21 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Nellie Penner of Moundridge, KS.

She was predeceased by her husband, her siblings, and one great-granddaughter.
