Obituary of Mary Hildebrandt
Our mom, Mary Hildebrandt was born July 24, 1921 in Rosenfeld, MB to Maria Harder. Her mother passed away when Mary was 8 months old. She was taken in by various family members and adopted by Jake and Sarah Driedger at the age of 7. She grew up in Saskatchewan around Hague and later in Swan Plain. She married Isaac Hildebrandt settling down in Parkerview, SK. In 1954, the family bought a farm near Landmark, MB.
Mary was a hardworking housewife and mother of 7 children, including twins. Mom and Dad retired to Steinbach in 1978, enjoying some travel, a big garden, and a more relaxed life on Spruce Crescent.
Mary loved animals, especially horses and cats. She loved having her family around and serving them. She was always the perfect hostess—you could never leave her home until you had something to eat and drink. Even just before she went into the hospital in early December 2019, at the age of 98, she had such joy in helping make buns and peel potatoes for her last Christmas gathering with her large extended family. Mom was the Skip-Bo Queen, enjoying many rounds of the card game and although she loved to win, she would be most happy if everyone won a game. Her prayers for her family will be sorely missed.
Mary’s recovery after her time in hospital shows the amazing determination and strength she had until the very end. She spent her last five months at Greendale Estates in Grunthal, where she was well cared for by the homecare staff. The family would like to thank Mae, homecare coordinator, and the many homecare staff that helped Mom settle into her new home and the palliative care nurse who also provided excellent care in her last days. Though her health was once again failing, her faith remained strong and her hope was in her Lord Jesus.
On May 9, 2020 Mary went to her long-awaited eternal home where she now experiences perfect peace and rest.
Mary Hildebrandt is survived by sons, Henry (Sarah), John (Doreen), Jake (Marianne), Dennis (Jacqueline), Ed (Sheila); one daughter, Darlene (John); and son-in-law Kurt (Terri); 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was pre-deceased by her husband, Isaac; daughter, Sarah; grandson, Mark; daughter-in-law, Betty; and daughter-in-law, Marie.
Due to COVID-19 a private family funeral service for Mary Hildebrandt will be held Sunday, May 17, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB., with private family burial at Heritage Cemetery.
