Cornelius Martens

Obituary of Cornelius J. Martens

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Cornelius J.  Martens, of Kleefeld, MB, age 84, on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Dad passed away peacefully in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dad was born on August 10, 1935, in Plum Coulee, MB, the son of David and Justina Martens. He is survived by his four sons, Allen (Alvina), Dwayne (Carol), Patrick (Wendy), Wendell (Michelle), and their families.  He is also survived by two sisters and three brothers.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, his parents and five brothers.

On July 30, 1961, Dad married Mom in the Grunthal CMC church. From that point forward, Dad and Mom were committed to serving God. They spent the rest of their lives dedicated to this purpose. They were involved in many areas of church ministry, such as church planting, counselling, teaching and preaching. He loved to minister and connect with people, and his impact was felt by many. In addition to church ministry, Dad also enjoyed many outdoor pursuits such as skiing, hunting, hiking and drives to Sandilands where he loved blueberry picking with family and friends. In his solitary times he was an avid reader and would love discussing his current books with his children and grandchildren when they would visit.

Dad was always willing to give of his time to family and friends.  He would often help his boys with their building projects, help butcher deer, and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to hunt. He took great interest in the lives of his grandchildren, often asking them about their pursuits and he made a point of having meaningful conversations with them over frequent coffee dates and meals. Dad's generous spirit was not limited to his family. He was a mentor and a role model to many, leaving a legacy of faith and steadfastness.

In the last few weeks of his life, Dad was able to spend many moments with those he cared about. As his health declined, he was blessed to be able to spend his last days in the comfort of his own home.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  2 Timothy 4:7

We would like to thank the palliative care team for their compassion and care for our father, and the many people that have upheld our family in prayer.
