Obituary of Elma Warkentin

In loving memory of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.

Elma Warkentin (née Penner) passed away peacefully on Monday, June 8, 2020 at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home, Winnipeg, MB., at the age of 92, to be with her Lord and Saviour.

She is survived by her children: Sally (Gerald) Dereniwski, Elizabeth “Betty” Whitehouse, Wes (Colleen) Warkentin, son-in-law Gordon Pirrie, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and one brother, Bob Penner.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Warkentin, in 2010; one daughter, Ingrid Pirrie, in 2016; one son, George, in 1976; and one grandson, Gordon, in 1973.

Elma was born on July 9, 1927, one of ten children, in the Municipality of Morris, three miles from Lowe Farm, Manitoba. While growing up on the family farm, Elma received her education at the Heabert School and afterwards attended Elim Bible School in Altona, Manitoba for one year.

Elma married George Warkentin at the Kleefeld EMC Church on January 29, 1950. As a family, they farmed in Silberfeld, Manitoba for 15 years before moving to Niverville in 1965. Elma worked at the Egg Grading Station and the Hatchery in Niverville as well as at the Nursing Home in St. Adolphe.

Elma loved sewing and knitting for her family and friends along with baking, cooking, and canning. Many babies born at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg received baby caps knitted by Elma. She enjoyed volunteering at the MCC Thrift Store in Niverville, the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Steinbach, and with a variety of church and community programs including Seed Sowers. Elma also enjoyed summer vacations with her family, along with camping and fishing.

Later in life, Elma and George moved to Steinbach and were involved with ministries in the U.S. and at an orphanage in Baja, Mexico. Elma continued to volunteer and contribute to various ministries and programs during the last ten years of her life. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family members.

We would like to thank all the staff at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home for their support and care.
