Obituary of Gertie Loewen

Gertie Loewen was born at the home of her parents, David and Elizabeth Klassen, in Heuboden (north of Kleefeld) on April 5, 1927.

When she was still a baby her family moved to Ekron, southeast of Steinbach, then to the Ridgewood district and as a teenager to Blumenort. She recalls a happy childhood on the farm, playing with her six sisters and two brothers. As a young woman she worked in Winnipeg as a maid, and then at the P.J. Loewen general store; she loved serving the public. When she was 21, she was baptized in the Blumenort Kleine Gemeinde church and married her neighbour, Dave P. Loewen; together they took over the Loewen farm when Dave’s family moved to Mexico in 1950.

She loved being a young mother as children Beverly, Judith, Royden, Deborah, Bonita and Mark appeared on the scene. She enjoyed many friends all her life, especially as part of her church’s sewing circle and then later as she sang in the Mitchell choir. She and Dave enjoyed a love-filled marriage, and they especially delighted in making new friends and travelling the world.

Her faith was very important to her and she kept up a positive spirit throughout her last years, even as she moved as a widow from Oakwood Manor in Blumenort to Cedarwood Apartments in Steinbach. To her last years she continued to make new friends; Don from across the hall was an especially important person in her last year, and she also profoundly appreciated the caring staff at Cedarwood.

Her children and grandchildren remember her warm hugs, sense of humour and love of table games. And being an avid reader, she possessed an incredible vocabulary.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Dave Loewen, in November 1998, and by five of her eight siblings.

She will be dearly missed by her six children, six in-laws, 17 grandchildren and their spouses, and her 34 great-grandchildren. She will always be remembered as the loving Grandma Trudy. Gertie passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on Tuesday June 9, 2020.
