Obituary of Bernhard (Ben) Brandt

Ben Brandt, age 78, passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 10:38 pm at his residence. He is relieved of his suffering and now enjoying heaven.

Ben is survived by his loving wife Rosa; daughter Pam, husband Niles and their children Kyla, Leanna, Calen, wife Teshia with great-grandson Andrew, Justin, & Saphina; daughter Loralie, husband Mike and their children Ashton, Annalise, & Alaya; son Ivan, wife Doris and their children Logan, Xavier, & Maylea; seven sisters and two brothers.

Ben was predeceased by his parents and one brother.

In July of 1942, Ben was born to Frank and Margaretha Brandt. His parents never came to an agreement which exact date, as his birth was near midnight. For sake of simplicity the documents state the 6th, but you can pick whatever day of the year you like because that’s how Ben celebrated it.

In January of 1968, Ben found the love of his life. She was a school teacher from Landmark that was teaching his siblings in Riverton, Manitoba. After a short relationship, Ben and Rosa got married on August 3, of the same year. Right after marrying, he moved his new bride to an isolated spot in Maryfield, SK with no phone and no car. Because of the no phone situation and long work days, Rosa often waited for hours not sure when he would come home for supper. Within the first 5 years of marriage, work took him to different places in Manitoba and eventually they settled down in Landmark where they raised their children.

Ben held many jobs throughout his life, some of which include lumberjack, brick laying, concrete finishing, and roofing. After being registered with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), he taught himself how to build. He went on to build an office/cottage for Rosa, a double-car garage, and several additions & renovations to their current home.

Anytime day or night, Ben found joy in going for a ride. He jumped at any opportunity to go for a coffee or an ice cream, even a last minute overnight trip to Calgary with Ivan. Ben enjoyed talking to anybody who gave him the time of day. He touched the lives of many, even strangers. He had such a strong desire that all would come to know the Lord as their personal Saviour. At any social gathering, Ben would look for anyone who seemed isolated to themselves or alone, and would go and spend time with them to show that he cared.

Ben loved spending time with his grandchildren-making each one feel special; having fun with them and always taking an opportunity to teach them something. He always brought laughter and joy into the home.

Dad, your “cherry-on-top” viewpoint along with a grateful attitude in life has forever impacted our lives.
