Obituary of Elmer Freund

Elmer Freund, age 84, of Steinbach, passed away peacefully on Aug 31, 2020 at Steinbach Bethesda Hospital.

He is survived by his sisters Linda Freund, Norma Dyback, Elaine (Ted) Osadchuk and Eileen Freund.

He was pre-deceased by two sisters, Nora Freund and Elfrieda Smuk, two brother-in-laws, Roy Freund and Tom Dyback, two grand nephews, Zachary Warkentin and Brandon Smith and one grand neice, Kristen Chaban.

Elmer was born in Steinbach and grew up on the family farm in Friedensfeld where he built his own home on the property and moved into it in 1971 with his mother Alma Freund.  He worked 19 years at William Dyck & Sons as a gifted finish carpenter. He followed that career by becoming a Dairy Farmer, milking 35 cows and received multiple awards from Manitoba Milk Producers for milk quality over those 10 years.

Elmer spent his retirement traveling out to Western Canada taking in the rodeo circuit where he made many new friends.  His hobbies included woodworking projects, growing flowers in his own greenhouse and maintaining his big beautiful yard.  Elmer was a soft spoken man who had a very deep faith in God.  He was very active in his church where he was an Elder for many years, sat on church council, as well as being a caretaker of the church cemetery.  He made a great impact within the congregation with his gentle demeanor and acts of service.  Elmer loved watching old classic Western movies as well as listening to Country and Gospel Music, and would spend many evenings listening to preaching on the radio.

Elmer was single all his life but was very dedicated to his sisters families.  He hosted the family Christmas and Easter gatherings as well as many family wiener roasts.  He loved having family come and stay casual weekends at the farm or just come by for a visit.   Many wonderful memories were made on the farm.

In late 2019, Elmer was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.  He stayed at home until the cancer progressed and was then admitted to hospital.  He spent his final week saying goodbye to family, while anxiously waiting for Jesus to take him home so he could eat at the Lords Table.  He passed away peacefully in the early morning with very little pain throughout his hospital stay.

The family is thankful to the nursing staff at Bethesda Hospital for the excellent care he received.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Paul’s church memorial fund.
