Obituary of Peter Krahn

It is with thankfulness of a life well lived that we announce the passing of our dear father Mr. Peter P Krahn.  It is with great love and sadness that we say goodbye to a loving Dad, grandfather, and great grandfather at the age of 93.

Those left to celebrate his legacy are his loving children Dave and Bernice Krahn, Bert and Barb Krahn, Ken and Emily Krahn, Dianna and Ken Warkentin, 14 grandchildren, and spouses and 18 great-grandchildren.  Dad is survived by two sisters, Annie Kasdorf and Erna Nickel as well as many relatives and friends.  He was predeceased his loving wife Erna, six siblings, Gertrude, Katie, two sisters at childbirth, and brothers Henry and John.

Dad was born on July 11, 1927 to Peter and Katerina Krahn on a farm north of Niverville.  He grew up on this farm and helped his father in the raising of laying hens and farming.  He met the love of his life, Erna Toews our Mother, at church with the innocent offer to help Mom’s father, the choir conductor with the church choir.  As Mom was the church pianist there was the necessity to get together to practice and rehearse, and that they did.  They were blessed with 4 children which brought them much joy.  Dad farmed together with his father and as his father slowed down, Dad took on additional responsibilities.  The farm prospered with the acquisition of more land as well as laying quota in anticipation of some of the boys taking over the farm.

Dad enjoyed giving back to the Community by serving on the Hanover School Board, Niverville Credit Union Board, The Manitoba Egg Marketing Board, and various other committees, boards, and volunteer work.  He carried out this work willingly and always indicated that we need to give back to the Community and Businesses in which we work.

Church was an essential part of Dad’s life.  His love for his Creator was always evident in the community and the church.  He was an integral part of the Niverville Mennonite Church its committees and outreachDad’s responsibilities included choir conductor for over 25 years with many choir practices, concerts, and performances.  He was also involved in numerous Men’s singing groups and his bass voice was well recognized.  His musical abilities were complimented by Mom’s love for music and her exceptional piano skills.  He also willing represented the local congregation as their chairperson and was always incredibly positive about the church and the outreach and difference it could make to the surrounding community.  He always encouraged family and friends to pay more attention to others than themselves which was evident in the way he lived the Golden Rule.  With our Mom’s diagnosis of MS in the early 80’s Dad became the primary care giver, and we will always see Dad as the best example of a husband in the way he unapologetically cared for our mother in her ongoing battle with the disease.

We would like to thank the staff at the Niverville Personal Care Home for the attention and care that was given to Dad in making him comfortable over the last number of years. Dad was stoic, loving, generous and strong and touched the lives of so many and will never be forgotten.  We could say that Dad’s song has ended but the melody lingers on

A private service will be held on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 7:00 p.m., at Niverville Community Fellowship.

Donations to honor Dad can be made to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank under either "In Memoriam" or under "MCC".
