Obituary of Florence Beattie Small

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that we say goodbye to our loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt, Cousin and Friend.  She’s been called back into the arms of her beloved husband and dance partner Douglas who predeceased her on June 21, 2015.

Mom passed away on February 24, 2021, just shy of her 90th birthday (March 19).  She is survived by her children, David (Cheryl), Gary (Donna), Bonnie (Sandy), Doug Jr (Charlotte), Cheryl, Rick (Doreen), and Randy (Louise).  She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was the youngest of 6 children and all siblings, parents and in-laws have predeceased her.  In her younger years, she worked at Eaton’s then worked in the office at the Elevators until her marriage to Doug on April 26, 1952 at which time she stayed home to raise their 7 children.

She was a very creative writer and wrote the Richer News column in the Steinbach Carillon for several years.  She was involved in her church and The Young at Heart Club in Richer and was very active with clogging and aqua sizing.  She used her artistic abilities to create beautiful bird houses and other woodworking crafts.  Mom’s beautiful singing was so infectious and there were many times when all around her broke out in a fun sing song.

We have fond memories of her sitting on the floor with the grand children and great grand children playing games and singing to them.  She had a very happy marriage of 63 years with Doug and they kept active until his illness in 2015.  She took up residence in Villa Youville Personal Care Home for the past couple years.

The family would like to extend a big thank you to the hardworking nurses and staff who provided compassionate and exceptional care for mom especially with the challenges during these Covid-19 times.   Also thank you to Sister Irene for her support and prayers during mom’s last days.

Cremation has taken place.  Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, a celebration of life will take place at a later date when mom and dad’s ashes will be laid to rest as per their wishes.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Florence may be made to The Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.
