Obituary of Dick Hildebrand

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dietrich “Dick” Rempel Hildebrand of Steinbach, MB on Tuesday May 4, 2021 at his home in Steinbach at the age of 83 years.

Left to mourn are three sons, Dan, Tim, Jerry (Paula), one daughter Marilyn (Anthony Thiessen) eight grandchildren, Eric, Kaia, Matthew, Brittany, Warrick, Grace, Israel, Abigail, one brother, Bill (Pauline) Hildebrand, 2 sisters, Helen (Tom) Ho, Mary Louise (Bob) Montgomery and one step-sister-in-law Dorothy Martens.

He was predeceased by his wife Elsie, parents Dietrich and Katherina Hildebrand, step-mother Elizabeth and step-brother John Martens.

Dad was born on March 25, 1938 in Osterwick, Saporosche, Russia.  He lived in Osterwick for his first 5 years before the family was forced to move because of World War 2.  After living in Europe for a few years, the family moved to Canada and dad became a Canadian citizen on April 15, 1955.  He was baptized when he was 18 years old and his faith remained strong throughout his life. Dad first met mom at her brother John’s wedding.  Apparently Dad was quite the poet and won Mom’s heart. They were married on April 28, 1963.

Growing up, and into his senior years, dad's favorite sport was baseball and man, could he smack that ball. Even when he played in the senior leagues, he could still hit home runs. Dad enjoyed family gatherings, and he always looked forward to getting together with his children and grandchildren. In his later years, he couldn't get enough of them and wanted to get together frequently.

As a teenager, dad worked at his father's business, Hildebrand Service. He was working as a mechanic, but soon realized that wasn’t the career path he wanted to pursue. He started Hildebrand’s Bargain Store, now known as Hidebrand's Music, which has been in business for over 60 years. Dad was always sharing his love of music. Every Saturday for many years, he hosted a free music program in the store basement. This event started as a small gathering and quickly grew to groups of 300-400 guests enjoying the live music every week.  Dad also spent many evenings over the years singing and playing his keyboard for people in care homes. He was passionate about his business and even helped make buying decisions for the store right to the very end. He was able to rest peacefully knowing one of his sons is carrying on the family business.

Dad enjoyed an extraordinarily healthy life until 2 years ago when he started having health issues. He was able to overcome many challenges in those 2 years, but eventually the complications proved to be too much and God called His son home.

If friends so desire, donations in memory of Dick Hildebrand may be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
