Obituary of Margaret Hiebert

Peacefully, on the morning of Wednesday, July 28, 2021, while holding the hands of her daughters, Esther and Carol and surrounded by her family, our Mother, Grandma and Great Grandma, passed away at the age of 98 years.

She was born on September 25, 1922, to Martin and Katherine Klassen in Gouldtown, Saskatchewan.

Margaret is survived by her son Bob (Olga), daughter Esther (Philip), daughter Carol (Larry), son Norman (Sandy), and son Ken (Heather); 13 grandchildren: Gordon, Gwen, Bailey (Lyndon), Darcy (Jennifer), Todd (Carol), Marshall (Tanya), Faron (Lynne), Jeremy (Juanita), Claudette (Myron), Kim (Mike), Tyler (Christina), Kevin, Laura (Aaron); 23 great-grandchildren: Todd, Joshua (Natalie) Mason, Alexander, Nikolas, Connor, Abigail, Benjamin, Quinton, Jaida, Aaron, Evan, Emily, Emma, Lucas, Jorja, Eli, Nathan, Heidi, Jude, Athena, Easton and Olivia.

Margaret married Henry in 1941 in Margaret’s parent’s home near Carrot River, Saskatchewan. They homesteaded near Carrot River. Four of their children were born here. In 1956, they moved to Burns Lake, BC., where their fifth child was born.

Margaret and Henry left Burns Lake in 1962 with many fond memories and moved to MacGregor, Manitoba. In 1971, they moved to 1146 Windermere Ave in Winnipeg, where they lived for 30 years. This is where Grandma and Grandpa did lots of babysitting of their grandchildren. Mom worked in the hospitality industry in BC at the Tweedsmuir Hotel and in Winnipeg at the Townhouse, Seven Oaks and the Capri Motels. At this time, they began attending the Morrow Gospel Church and have always been thankful for their church family.

Our Dad moved into a personal care home in the summer of 2001 and passed on October 14, 2001. At this time Mom moved to the Adamar apartments. She made many friends while living there. We celebrated many Hiebert Christmas gatherings here, complete with a turkey dinner for 40 to 45 family members. In 2018, she moved to Meadowood Manor Tower. She was very thankful for her phone during COVID-19 as it was so important for her to stay in touch with her family. Mom often talked about her childhood without any phones when you wouldn’t hear from family for months at a time. In April 2021, Mom began to have health issues and spent three weeks at the Victoria Hospital. When she came home, she never really recovered.  On June 24, she moved to the Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home. Although, she was only there five weeks, our family was very appreciative of the care she received at the Manor

Our Mom is fondly remembered for making many of our family favourites, such as borscht, wareneki, schmaunffat, roll kuchen and of course many batches of homemade buns for faspa.  After Mom retired, she enjoyed many hobbies. These included camping with Dad and their family and friends in their Boler trailer, Bible studies, making hangers with Dad and doing word search puzzles. Mom also knit many, many teddy bears which she donated to charities and gave to her family.

Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma you were our Matriarch. We love you and we will miss you always.
