Obituary of Doris Friesen

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our blessed mom, Doris R. Friesen on Sunday, March 6, 2022 in her home. It was a blessing to our family to be able to care for mother in her last days.

She is survived by her six children: Patti (Farley) Fries, Margie (Tom) Curtis, Lori (Randy) Vertone, Carol (Ron) Bachmeier, Kathy (Mark) Peters, David (Vanessa) Friesen, 19 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, two sisters, Jessie Giesbrecht and Helen Loewen and brother-in-law Ron Merriam.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Dave, her parents and two brothers.

Mom was born September 22, 1932, in Steinbach, MB. She met the love of her life in 1949, while visiting friends on the farm. They were married in 1954. Mom was baptized in 1954 and belonged to the CMC and later the Grace Mennonite Church. Mom always had messages to encourage us all to have a strong belief in Jesus as our personal saviour.

Mom’s strong work ethic started at a young age helping out in her family dry goods store. From there she ventured out to various other jobs including down east to work in a peach cannery. In 1959 an opportunity arose for mom and dad to start the Steinbach Fabric Shop which turned into a successful business for 37 years allowing them to establish life long friendships with members of the community. Mom’s career expanded beyond the store. She designed and sewed countless bridal gowns with perfection. Alongside dad, they started a side business of blinds and draperies; her passion drove her success.

Mom was a strong leader with a big heart, always putting others ahead of herself. Her creative talents were passed down to her family. Mom had a love of music that included all genres. Mom was a great cook, passing on her ethnic Mennonite recipes to her family.

With all mom’s great accomplishments, her greatest was her family; always supporting her grandchildren with whom she shared a special bond. She was such a large presence in all of our lives and will be missed dearly.

On behalf of the family, we would like to thank the home care staff, hospital staff, palliative care, Silver Linings and all those who cared for mom in her last days.

Funeral service will be held Monday, March 14, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Mennonite Church, Steinbach, MB. Public viewing at 1:00 p.m.

Private immediate family interment will be held following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Youth For Christ, Steinbach (Backstage).
