We here in the SIM Village in Sebring, FL, love Harry and Norma Koop! Harry was always encouraging, smiling, energetic, enthusiastic and on top of that he loved people so well! From having so much energy and enthusiasm in tackling the next roof, to leading the singing in the Lodge and especially to annually bringing down the house with his Snow Story, Harry was a major part of each Volunteer Season!! Norma, you and Harry were so loved by all the Village! And will always be remembered!! We are praying so much for your, Norma! Love, John and Beaj

On behalf of the Rosenort School staff and community, I wish to honour the memory of our former Principal, Harry Koop, who served our school and community for 11 years (1979 - 1990).
Mr. Koop graduated with a Bachelor of Science with a major in mathematics in 1970 from the University of Manitoba. His first teaching job took him to Brazil. In the mid 1970s he started teaching in Rosenort and by 1979 was the principal of both schools: the K - 8 school located on the current school premise, and the Rosenort Collegiate, which was located where the present day, Red River Church of God in Christ Mennonite church is located. The 1979 - 1980 yearbook describes Mr. Koop’s first year this way. “Mr. Koop has done a splendid job in his first year as principal… Being principal of both schools has kept him “flying” (and we do mean flying), between both schools all year. He’s become increasingly more organised.” In addition to providing leadership, Harry Koop also taught Geography 101, History 101 and 201, Biology 200 and English 200 and 300. It is obvious that he believed strongly in the Principal’s Message he wrote for the yearbook that same year.
“Not too many years ago we were concerned with the many ‘new ideas’ in education. Today ‘costs’ are paramount. While we look back with nostalgia at the ‘good old days’ the present slips through our fingers. It is important to keep reminding ourselves that we have only the present to work with. How we treat the present will determine the impact we will have on the future. Although ideas, costs, and technology change, people have remained essentially unchanged since the dawn of creation. The basic needs that we have are no different than those our parents and grandparents had.
In order to perform at near potential a person must feel important, valuable, and appreciated. Teachers have a significant part in this most important aspect of every one's education. It is the ‘think positive’ attitude. The attitude of the proverbial little engine that chugged up a steep hill with a long row of grain filled box-cars puffing and singing, ‘I think I can… I think I can… I think I can,’ while other larger, more beautiful , and much stronger locomotives excused themselves with ‘too long… too heavy… too tired’. We may not make much of an impact on our world with our athletic abilities or mental prowess, but if someone will start to think ‘I can’ because of our encouragement instead of ‘no way…not me’ we have done worlds more than the many whose names are only etched on trophies, and plaques.”
In 1987, a gymnasium and additional classrooms were added to the K - 8 School. The Collegiate moved into the new classrooms with the K - 3 moving into what was the collegiate, across the street.
During Mr. Koop’s tenure as the Principal of Rosenort School (1979 - 1990), he was often seen playing soccer in all kinds of weather outside with the students. He had boundless energy and was consistently upbeat. He balanced his strong and wise leadership with care and compassion.
Our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Norma, and family Vanessa, Lyle, and Jeannine and their families.

When our mom (Elma Plett) forwarded the news of Harry’s passing on our family thread this week, there were many responses reflecting on how much our family appreciated Harry during our years in Rosenort. He was a caring principal, an engaging teacher, and a wonderful tennis partner & friend to our dad, Stan.
We are all so sorry for your loss!

Harry was my epic tennis partner. He emerged as Victor on our last match. I shall miss that, his humor, and his wisdom. My condolences to Norma and his family.
