Obituary of Helen Dyck

It is both with sadness and gratitude that the family of Helen Hiebert Dyck announce the peaceful passing of their dear mother. She was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for the entirety of her brief hospital stay. This brought her much peace and joy.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Bill & Theresa Dyck, Jake Dyck, Jake & Marianne Hildebrandt, Dave & Martha Dyck, Peter & Dorothy Dyck, Ben & Sherry Dyck, John Dyck, Dianne & Russ Fast and Bev & John Culligan; her 19 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; as well as her sister Anne Doerksen (Kamloops, BC) and her brother Dave & Carol Hiebert (Winnipeg, MB).

She was predeceased by her husband Peter, on January 22, 2012, and her daughter Betty Hildebrandt, on June 26, 1990.

Helen was born in Niverville, MB. She attended school in the Arran school district. She married Peter Dyck on July 31, 1950, and they made their home in New Bothwell, MB., where most of their children were born. They moved to Linden, MB., in 1965, where they had one more child to complete their family. In their retirement years they moved to Mitchell, MB., and later to Steinbach, MB. They enjoyed being physically active together, cycling and gardening. They ministered in song to people in hospital and senior care home’s for more than a decade.

Mom and Dad moved to Stone Creek Courts and once they made the adjustment from their own home to a condo, they loved their time there. After Dad’s passing and Mom’s heart attack, she needed more help. She moved to Bridgepark Manor where she spent the last almost four years. Although she missed her friends  dearly at Stone Creek, it wasn’t long before she had many new friends at  Bridgepark.

Mom was an amazingly accomplished seamstress. She sewed everything from men’s tailored suits, to wedding dresses and grad gowns, as well as countless pyjamas and other clothing for her grandchildren. In her later years, she began sewing denim picnic blankets.

Mom’s home was always spotlessly clean and organized. She spent many years cleaning for others in Winnipeg. She developed relationships which turned to friendships that last to this day.

Mom taught Sunday School in the Mitchell Chortitzer Church where she had many favourite students.

Our mom loved the Lord and would tell anyone and everyone about her Saviour. Her entire life was marked by God’s faithfulness. The last days were evident her roots had gone deep into the soil of His marvellous love and she trusted Him.

She loved to read autobiographies about other people’s faith journeys.

Mom was diagnosed with lung cancer August 2021. At first it didn’t slow her down too much or dampen her desire to enjoy life. She loved to eat, especially sugary sweets. Her last food request was “just a little bit of some good chocolate”, two days before she passed. 

Many thanks to the staff at Bridgepark Manor and her friends. She enjoyed her relationships with all, especially her table friends, and Della Fast, with whom she shared a special bond - children, grandchildren and great-grandchilden. A special thanks to Dr. Gordon Dyck, Nurse Lori and Dr. Gray who looked after mom the last four days with the absolute best and most tender, respectful care.

A private family funeral service will be held with a burial at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
