On Wednesday, May 4, 2022, our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather Albert Kihn, passed away peacefully, at Bethesda Place, with family by his side, at the age of 93.

Albert was predeceased by his wife Margaret, 24 hours earlier, and his five siblings.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughters: Valerie (Bruce) Martin, Marlys (Boyd) Borkowsky and Shauna (Ron) Schellenberg; his sons Colin (Sandra) and Mark (Candice); and by his 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren: Erin (Shawn) Sadler, & Hailey; Troy (Charissa) Martin, Charles & Amelia; Dana (Stephane) Saindon & Brexton: Chloe Kihn, Brett Kihn, Chelsey (Jayme) Gunderson & Silas; Bailey Doug) McLachlan, Kenzie & Sydney; Amy Borkowsky, Aryelle (Tyler) Sylvester & Jett; Breanne (Bryan) Nichol, Harlowe & Huxton; Carter Schellenberg , and one sister, Erna Hein.

Albert grew up on a farm in Hochstadt and attended school until grade seven. His strong work ethic began early in life as he worked with his dad on the farm and later at a bush camp in British Columbia. He started Steinbach Messenger Service which offered a variety of services including the first garbage pick-up in Steinbach. Dad was a shoemaker at Modern Shoe Shop and apprenticed at Barkman Plumbing & Heating for seven years. After that he started his own business, Kihn’s Plumbing & Heating in 1964.

Driving home after a workday, Albert passed a beautiful young brunette that caught his eye. He stopped and offered to give her a ride home and won her over with his fun-loving personality and their courtship began. They married four years later and enjoyed 68 years of wedded bliss.

Dad enjoyed the outdoors and liked to go camping and fishing. If you were ever to pop by the house, you’d find dad tinkering on or building something in his workshop. A huge passion of his was restoring many old antique cars. He also enjoyed creating lawn ornaments made out of stones that resembled ducks and cranes. Hundreds of these ornaments can be found around Manitoba.

Dad had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening, particularly his strawberry and pumpkin patches. His Hosta’s were huge and he always planted too many potatoes. We can give credit to Dad for our entire families love of potatoes.

Retirement freed up lots of time and Dad loved to drive. Frequent road trips with mom included many shopping trips to the States, rides around the countryside or a spontaneous drive to Winnipeg to eat dinner and check out the greenhouses. His daughters can give credit to both parents for their love of retail therapy.

Dad was a man of tremendous faith and passes on that legacy to his children and grandchildren. Dad and mom were members at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and were actively involved as long as they were able. A special thank you to Pastor Terry Gudmundson and Pastor Al Maier for their visitations and spiritual guidance.

Our family wishes to express our appreciation and gratitude for all the prayers, words of encouragement, cards and expressions of sympathy received from family and friends. A special thank you to Dr. Rozbacher and the staff at Bethesda Place for the patient and compassionate care they provided. Your kindness was appreciated.
