Obituary of Leo Cyr

With great sadness we announce that Leo Joseph Guy Cyr passed away suddenly on Friday, May 20, 2022.

Leo is survived by his brother Nick Cyr, and sister Yvette Cyr, both of Giroux, daughter Roxane Cyr and ex-wife Roberta Wells of Marchand, daughter Nichole and son-in-law, Colin Hiebert and grandsons Carson and Conall Hiebert of Winkler.

Leo was born in St. Boniface on August 6, 1949, to Louis and Henriette Cyr. Growing up he worked diligently on the family dairy farm near Giroux. Leo attended school in La Broquerie and after graduation attended St. Paul’s College (University of Manitoba) and later, the University of Winnipeg and Concordia.

As a young man Leo worked in a mine for Inco in Thompson, MB, and on power lines for Manitoba Hydro. His career was with the Canadian Pacific Railway, in Winnipeg and in Montreal. During a downturn in the economy Leo worked in Saskatchewan doing home renovations and the Yukon doing road construction.

After his father’s passing in 1988 Leo returned to Giroux and resumed operations of the family farm. Leo was proud of his herd of Charolais cattle that lived on the farmland near Marchand.

Leo retired from the CPR in 2007 and his first grandchild was born the following spring. Leo was a devoted grandfather to Carson and Conall. Leo travelled all over Manitoba to cheer on his grandsons as they played hockey. Ever humble, when asked which player was his grandchild, Leo would simply say, “Oh, you will notice him!”. The family thanks all of the hockey families who have expressed condolences on Leo’s passing.

Leo will be remembered as a gentle giant with almost Herculean physical strength. Leo was kind, generous and nurturing. He was honest, intelligent, helpful and loving. He was very loved by his family and he will be very missed.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Joachim Catholic Parish with an interment to follow at the Parish Cemetery, La Broquerie, MB, with a reception to follow.
