Obituary of Greta Lajoie

Greta Irene Lajoie, 66 of Winnipeg, MB, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at her home.

She is survived by her children Patrick (Kim), Karen, Terry (Crystal), Matthew (Sheila), Michelle (Ian), Bruce (Julie), Gail (Gerald), Katherine, Jason (Christine). Her siblings: Gordon (Debby), Walter (Brenda), Donna (Gil), Betty (Scott) and brother-in-law Tony; as well as numerous Grandchildren/Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her Husband Roger Lajoie, Mother Marie Aitken, Father John Aitken, Brother Andrew Aitken and Sister Brenda Everett.

Greta was born June 5, 1956.

Greta was the ultimate homemaker as she had to be with having to raise her many children and being an amazing wife to Roger. One thing all her children could agree on is her great skill of making homemade fries. They would all fight for who would be first and the last would be drooling until it was finally their turn. Come holidays she was the one to cook the giant turkey and all the fixings for all her kids and grandkids. She always made sure everyone was fed! We’ll be lost when we need the ingredients to her perfected chili and porcupine meatballs.

Greta never drove but all of her kids would remember when she attempted and tried. One memory when we lived in Richer, MB. We all packed in the station wagon with a few sitting on in the back with the tailgate open and when she had to turn right to get home, she must have forgotten where the brakes were because we went around that corner fast and the kids on the back fell off the tailgate. Dad was not happy when we got home that is for sure.

She loved when all the family would get together every Saturday night for poker games. During the week she would save all her change to make sure she was ready to win the “big pots “and she was lucky most of the time! She also loved to play Canasta, skip Bo and do crossword puzzles and talk on the phone for hours with her sisters. She had a great collection of porcelain dolls which some might agree was a bit creepy.

She loved and adored her many grandchildren. She would always make sure even with the small amount of money she had that they always had a gift at Christmas and Easter and a treat on Halloween. They remember how Nana would say “When I get that big cheque, I am taking you on a shopping spree” and she would sneak treats into her grandkids bedrooms when she lived with her children. She lived with her son Terry at the time when her last Grandchild was born, Lexus. She had such an amazing connection with her, and Lexus loved her “Nanny” so much.

She gave the best hugs and when you were feeling down you knew that a hug from her was all you needed. When you needed to talk or vent she was always there to listen and would always be on your side no matter what. She was our protector and will be terribly missed by many.
