Sadly I woke up sick today so I will be just down the road watching online. But I want to thank the Barkman family for sharing their husband, father and grandfather with our community. I am so grateful for the years we did bible study together. For all the visits we shared. I will be keeping you in my prayers Betty. Love you.

I am so thankful to God for this beloved brother and his dear wife Betty. I first met Leonard at a baptism for some friends at Pansy Chapel one summer. I had heard of him, and when I got to him in the reception line all I knew to say was "Hi Pastor Barkman" as I reached out my hand. He didn't like that very much and I will never forget him grabbing my hand and giving me a massive high five with his other! Then he said, "That's brother Leonard to you, boy!" I had never had someone his age do, or say, anything like that to me in my life! I immediately thought to myself, "I should call this guy up and get to know him." It took me a few months but eventually I gathered my courage to do so, and I am thankful I did! Leonard (brother Leonard that is) and Betty generously opened their home and fed me more times than I can remember, but more than food I was fed God's Word and encouraged to walk with God every time. My wife and I are just one of the 200 weddings he performed. When I moved out of province, we regularly made their home one of our stops and they even came to visit us twice! There are a few things that this dear brother will forever leave as marks on my life.
1. His commitment to 'die with his work boots on.' At an age when many would retire and retreat, they joyfully pressed onward and upward toward the greater treasure of giving all for a Kingdom that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. Leonard and Betty believed in storing up treasures in heaven. I pray that I will be no different if the Lord grants me as many years.
2. His humility. I will never forget one of my visits. I started sharing some things I had been learning in my studies. He stopped me, rummaged around for a pen, grabbed a napkin, and asked if I could repeat what I had said. Here was a man who had been a pastor for more than twice as many years as I had been alive, and he wanted to write down something I had learned! This was his disposition, to learn and grow. This brother understood the Proverb "Let the wise hear and increase in learning." May I ever grow to be like him in this way!
3. His greatness. There is an account in the gospels when the disciples are fighting over who is the greatest in the kingdom. What is amazing is that Jesus doesn't rebuke them for wanting to be great, He just tells them how: "But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave." I am just one of countless others Leonard and Betty poured their lives out for. They had nothing to gain from helping me, nothing other than the joy of reflecting the beauty of being like Jesus Himself. May I learn from this worthy Christlike example.
I remember on one of the occasions Leonard and Betty came to visit, we took them up Sulfur Mountain to see the view. Our waitress served us very well, and out of the blue he asked, "are you by chance a Christian?" I cringed, but he was genuine and bold. Nothing came of that conversation per se, but this is just another of many memories that will undoubtedly come back as I think about the blessing Leonard and Betty have been to me.
My beloved brother, if were still alive I would tell you from my heart that my life is better because you were a part of it, and I thank God for you. Betty, we love you very much and equally thank God for you as well. May you know our Lord's comfort, that he holds every tear in a bottle and counts every tossing at night, not one escapes his loving care for you.

Now you can rest Pastor Barkman. Pastor Barkman it was such an honor to know you. You were an amazing Pastor, person, and friend. We were grateful for the visits and that you always wanted to include us as part of your church family. Invite us for lunch, dinner, or even for a night when we came out to Manitoba. You would always say...look Alberta is here. We are forever grateful for your kindness, words of devotion, and prayers. You truly were a man of God and a gift to all. We will never forget you and look forward to seeing you one day again.

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Betty and the entire Barkman family. As a young boy, I remember listening to Pastor Barkman at Pansy Chapel. It was years before I would rededicate my life as an adult but it was so impactful. A Godly man who spoke the Word, loved the Word, and most importantly lived the Word. He helped set a foundation for my own faith that I will always be grateful for and was always especially kind to my Mom and family through many difficult times after my father passed away. Kim and I will always fondly remember the supper we had at the Barkman house down by the "crik" years ago, and again being challenged and inspired by both Betty and Leonard. May God gently touch each of you in this time of grief, in the same way that Leonard demonstrated that Godly love to so many during his ministry.
