I still remember it as if it happened yesterday.
In 1999, the late Maria Dueck and the late Henry Dueck came to visit Conrad & Brenda and their children, Nat and Sam in my village in Salaga, Ghana.
When they came to greet the elders of my village, Brenda Dueck whispered words into Maria’s ears. Then she came closer to me and asked “ can you spell Ghana”? I answered yes and spelt Ghana.
Immediately, she took me aside the crowd and walked with me to their resident. She then, asked me to come back the following day after teaching me to read. ( Note: I was 11 years and not in school)
On the third day of teaching me how to read, she told me she will be going back to Canada the following day.
The next information that came to me was that she was ready to support me go through formal education.
It has been 23 years, and my life has been transformed for good. She touched my life and made me a part of her great family.
Her words “let’s pray to God who loves us and can do all things for us”
“ Keep on keeping on” lingers in my ears anytime I am confronted with a challenge in life.
From thousands of miles apart, you unconditionally loved and cared for me. You were generously kind to me. Words are often not enough to show what you meant to me.
I will miss you Grandma.
Rest on peacefully!
Your love,
John
To the entire Dueck family, my deepest condolences!

What a beautiful obituary you have written about your mother. We read it twice, there is much to emulate in her life, and we can see why you are all such wonderful kids when you read of her deep walk with Jesus and how she gave that away to us all.

Maria and I met through EMB Women's Ministries, and our friendship grew. Gerald and I also I had great regard for Henry. I was sorry when we lost track of each other. My condolences to Maria's family. I know she is safe in God's keeping.

The first time that I met Maria was in September of 1969 when Marge and I stopped at their home in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, when her husband Henry was pastoring there. At that time, I was dating Marge, and when I first met her oldest sister Maria, I knew that she was the kind of support for her husband that I also needed in the challenges for ministry that would lie ahead in my own journey.
Prior to pastoring in Wynyard, Henry and Maria had ministered in Fisher Bay and St. Laurent to be followed by ministry periods in Altona, Morris, and Niverville. On every location, there were challenges. There would have been opportunities to become embittered and discouraged. But Maria stood faithful to walk in love even when people were not kind. I know that it was not always easy to stand with her husband, and their faithful love for all of the saints bore good fruit wherever they went.
The legacy of her unwavering faith and steadfast commitment to a God who remains faithful is very evident in all of their children, and in their spouses and in their grand children. To my wife and me, she was a mother who role-modelled what it was like to be like Deborah, "a mother in Israel" (Judges 5:7).
The name Israel means "a prince with God," or refers to those who rule and who reign in life with God. Wherever she went, Maria raised up a family, a legacy of those who would rule and reign with God over the challenges in life. What a difference that she made for so many of us, leaving the world better off. Marge and I are eternally grateful!
There were four sisters in the Friesen family. Shortly after the passing of Anne, the following picture was taken of the remaining three sisters in Jasper, Alberta, where Marge, Maria and Agnes were celebrating Dori's 60th birthday! What a family! What a legacy! I am forever grateful to be even a small part of it. We are so blessed!
