Obituary of Susan Wiebe

Susan Wiebe (nee Peters) passed away peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2023, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.

She is survived by one son: Jim (Gladys); three grandchildren: Greg (Dana), Gary (Janelle), Janelle (Michael Unrau) and 12 great-grandchildren; one sister: Helen Lalonde; and three brothers: Harry, Abe, and George.

Mom was born to John D. & Susanna Peters on Nov. 6, 1923, near Hague, SK.

She was the third oldest in a large family and experienced farm life during the Great Depression. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith in the church they were a part of.

Mom worked for a time in food services at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon.

She married Isaac Wiebe on Dec 5, 1948, and they set up their first home on a small farm north of Saskatoon during which time the "adoption stork" added Jim to the family.

They moved to Quill Lake, SK. in 1960 and farmed there. In the last year or two mom shared various random stories from her childhood and both farms: Untimely frosts, dry spells, severe hail, an unseasonably warm fall to finish the harvest, and gardening memories. Aside from working hard on the farm and being an avid gardener, she was a meticulous (as in fussy) housekeeper and loved searching for and trying new recipes. Hardly an evening passed that Mom didn't tune in to the Haven of Rest and Back to the Bible radio broadcasts.

Isaac passed away suddenly in 1977. The farm was sold in 1980 and mom moved back to her childhood home to assist her mother.

She moved to Steinbach in the fall of 1985 to be closer to us. She worked in the kitchen at the Jolly Miller restaurant for a time and then joined the custodial staff at Southwood School for several years. She moved to Woodhaven Manor in 2012 when her decreasing mobility made it too difficult for her to stay at the house.

Then in March of this year she transferred to Rest Haven Care Home.

The funeral service will be held Friday, June 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB, with viewing one hour prior to the service.  Interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, MB.
