In 1967 I met Ken Schmidtke, the Accountant at the Royal Bank in Churchill, Manitoba. I was just out of highschool and as "green" as they come. I was hired by his Boss and Bank Manager, Mac Riddell, a truly nice man and mentor. Poor Ken endured "me" and the training process of a kid just out of highschool. I tried his patience sorely... I think he might be happily surprised to know that after that time of torment (for him) I turned out just fine and end up as Head of CRA Non-Tax Collections in Ottawa. So glad to know Ken found the love of his life and had a family, something I know he hoped for when I knew him. Rest in Peace Ken.

Dear Mark and Brock:
From co-worker to brother-in-law…. your dad and I first met when we worked together at the RBC in Steinbach.
Working with your dad was - interesting…. I remember he had a strong work ethic and strived to help his clients. But - I also remember: nobody could ‘slam down’ a phone like Ken Schmidtke!
Your dad was also very persistent- especially when it came to wanting to meet my single roommate. I finally gave in and introduced him to his future wife - your dear mom!. And the rest is history!
Many great memories come to mind: our many camping holidays, your mom and dad’s visit to Nova Scotia to see us, and the many, many, phone calls over the years that your dad and Uncle Ron had reminiscing their banking careers - and bragging about their kids!
In closing, someone once said to me: “remember the good times - not the bad”. I wish that for you and your families.
Hugs across the miles, Aunt Mary

My sincere condolences on your loss. Ken was my classmate and friend from Grade 1 through 8 and again in Grade 12. I lost touch with him after high school due to his many moves (and mine). One of my great joys growing up was being allowed to play with his father's (and his) elaborate model train set in their basement.

I first met Ken while I was still in high school and he got posted to little old Roland branch and came out to our farm for a horse back ride.
A few years later after I was working at RBC we worked together at St. Rose branch and got to enjoy camping and water skiing behind Ken’s boat on Dauphin Lake.
My next interaction with Ken was during his Audit Dept days where he worked with my wife Cathy, hitting all the hilites of rural Manitoba and educating the city girls on the team about crop varieties as they sped down the hiway.
Many years later Ken and I worked together in the north Winnipeg area office where Ken was tasked to lead a team in cleaning up a messy loan portfolio. We were together at McPhillips and Court on Ken’s last day at RBC. In typical fashion Ken wore his tie half knotted and decided it would be a good parting gesture to run his tie through the paper shredder. Thank God for an off switch as we had to cut him out with a big pair of scissors.
Irene,We’re so sorry to hear of your loss but so happy the two of you got to spend years of quality time together.

Mark and Brock we are saddened to hear about your Dad’s passing. I worked alongside with him for several years at the RBC audit department and travelled all of Manitoba. We kept in touch during all the years of our retirement. I will miss our many conversations talking about many subjects of the day.
Our prayers are with you and your respective families and we want to express our deepest sympathies.

Brock, Mark, and families.
We were very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. He and I met some 55 years ago.when we both worked at the same Branch of RBC. A friendship developed that has continued since and a lot of it centred around curling where we often curled, bonspieled, and had fun together. Our paths often crossed during our respective careers, although we only worked together at one time. You fellows may recall when as small boys, we were visiting at your folks and you were showing off your miniature John Deere farm equipment and I made an offer to buy it from you. No amount was going to close that deal, but I often think of how you fellows enjoyed playing with that equipment.
Unfortunately a prior commitment will prevent us from attending his service on Friday. Ken was a good friend and we shall miss him. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with both of you and your families as well as all Ken’s family during this difficult time. Hold close all the memories he has left behind.
Sincerely
Ralph and Carolyn Lee
