Obituary of Agnes Berg

Mom was born to David and Maria Wiebe (nee Reimer) on September 10, 1919 in Plum Coulee, Sec16-33West. In her early adult years she worked as a housekeeper for another family. She married Abe Berg on November 28, 1943. Mom is survived by four daughters and four sons: Mary & Lloyd Hutt, Martha Runke, Jacob Berg, John & Linda Berg, Eva Bergen, Herman Berg, Peter & Lesley Berg, and Ruth Berg; 20 grandchildren and their respective spouses; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister: Margaret & Abe Thiessen and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was pre-deceased by her husband Abe in 2004, one daughter in 1956, one grandson and one son-in-law. They lived in Suartburn and Tolstoi where Mom had a large garden and did a lot of canning. She also picked blueberries, saskatoons and plums as they were available. I remember when I thought I was eating canned pineapple but it actually was zucchini. Everything was put to good use. Because of Morn's knowledge of making different foods I learned about "Datch cooke" and "glums cooke" and other useful hints. When Dad and some of the older siblings went to the beet field to hoe beets for some extra income, Mom would start the milking (and sometimes finish) and do other farm chores while still keeping an eye out for the younger children. Sometimes she would go to the beet field when one of the siblings was old enough to stay home with the younger ones. She had three gallstone operations before they finally got all of them. They moved to Friedensfeld in 1968 at a fairly young age so that Herman and Ruth could benefit from the resources at Kindale & the SRSS. Here they could still raise their own meat and continue with a garden for vegetables. In 1974 they moved into Steinbach and in 2000 they sold their house and moved into the Fernwood apartments. June 25, 2003 Mom became a resident of the Rest Haven Nursing Home. Up until the last few years she would go for fairly long walks when the weather was suitable. Countless hours were spent on puzzles and sometimes even a competitive game of crokinole. On July 6, 2013 Mom went to her heavenly home at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 25 days. Her funeral was held Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Birchwood Funeral Chapel with interment at Heritage Cemetery.
