Obituary of William Ostrowsky

William Ostrowsky passed away at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, MB. William was born in Senkiw, MB. He married Alice D. Ratchinsky on July 16, 1960. They farmed at Senkiw until 1968 and at Rosa and Senkiw from 1968 to 2013. William was very active in farm organizations serving on the executive of the Border Beef Association, Eastern Grassland Society, SPADA and the Franklin Weed Board. He was also a member of the Manitoba Buckwheat Growers Association. He was active in the community as founding director and member of the Roseau River Park, helping at Bingo at the Shevchenko Ukrainian Centre for years, and involved in the Wildlife Association. He was also a member of the Nativity of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Senkiw. His hobbies and interests included: annually hunting moose, elk and deer, attending the Morris Stampede every night missing only the last three years, Hackney Pony Races, participating in agricultural tours to Montana, Alberta and within Manitoba, reading, and watching politics on TV. He loved his family and was a very generous man. He willingly helped his neighbours and gave many young people their first job. William is survived by his loving wife Alice, his daughter Cindy (Jarvis) Hrynenko; grandson Glenn Hrynenko (Camie); brothers Maurice (Margaret) and Bob (Rose); sisters Florence (Ken) Neilsen, Rosie Smook and Ann Ostrowsky; sisters-in-law Nellie and Doreen as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Nellie; brothers Peter and Harry and his parents-in-law Henry and Hilda Ratchinsky. The funeral service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel in Steinbach on Friday, July 19 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at the Nativity of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Parish Cemetery at Senkiw. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Nativity of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Parish Cemetery at Senkiw, c/o Patricia Gawronsky, Roseau River, MB R0A 1P0 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 1109 – 675 McDermot Ave.; Wpg., MB R3E 0V9 The family would like to extend special thanks to Rev. Fr. Oris Naherniak and Dobrod. Rose, Dr. R. Gumber, Dr. M. Thiessen, Dr. A. Leylek, Dr. A Pathak, all the caregivers at HSC CancerCare, and staff, emergency and ambulance drivers at Bethesda Hospital, family and friends who provided transportation, visited and who helped William and Alice at home, Hedy Friesen, Cathy Dyck and Mary Chubey.
