Obituary of Annie Peters

Peacefully, on Friday, March 4, 2011, at the age of 91, with her family at her side, Anna Peters died at the Rest haven Nursing Home in Steinbach. She was predeceased by her husband Herb and daughter Rita. She will be remembered by her children, Sieg (Irma), Willie (Karen), Edith (Dave) Hiebert, Art (Wendy), Evelyn (Rene) Peters-Rojas, Richard (Linda), son-in-law Abe (Linda) Martens and their families. Annie, as she was called, was born March 1, 1920 to Cornelius and Anna (Warkentin) Peters in Rudnerweide, Russia. In 1925 her family immigrated to Canada and settled in Glenlea, Manitoba, later moving to a farm near New Bothwell. Due to her mother’s ill health Mom was needed at home and was thus only able to complete Grade Seven. In her late teen years she spent a year working as a domestic in Winnipeg, helping her family pay the “reiseschult” (travel debt). Mom was baptized in the Niverville Mennonite Church by Aeltester Johann Enns. She married Herbert Peters on July 6, 1940 in a large rented tent on her parent’s farmyard. As was frequently the custom, born out of practicality, they moved in with Herb’s parents in Chortitz (now Randolph) for the first years of their married life. They then farmed together with Dad’s brother, Henry and family, for several years until, in1952, a new house and barn were built just south of Randolph. This was home to Dad and Mom until 1973. Steinbach Mennonite Church and the Ebenezer Verein (Ladies Aid) were very important to Mom. For many years she was the president of the Ladies Aid. Mom also taught Sunday School and volunteered in the local MCC Thrift Store for many years. Mom’s love of nature and all ‘growing things’ made for large gardens and beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed baking. Lemon rolls, Napoleon’s Torte and gooseberry perishky were regularly on ‘the most requested’ list! Her dill pickles were a family favourite and are remembered fondly. Mom delighted in her grandchildren, and would spend countless hours playing with them, a favourite game being Old Maid. Wagon rides to the nearby park, playing in the backyard sandbox and dishes of ice-cream were special ‘Grandma time’. Her engaging, warm smile and easy laugher at the antics of her grandkids brought much joy! Mom & Dad enjoyed travelling and often spent weekends with daughter Rita, Abe and their children at nearby lakes. Trips included travelling to Ontario to visit Mom’s siblings, visiting children in Paraguay and Bolivia, as well as a couple of Hawaiian excursions. After Dad’s death, Mom visited children in Mexico and Bolivia. In January 2003, Mom moved into the Rest Haven Nursing Home. She adjusted well and learned to love her new home, giving of herself and bringing joy to others! As a family we want to express our heart-felt thanks to the staff at Rest Haven who lovingly cared for and supported our Mom. We are grateful for Mom’s faith in God. Her faith was quiet and steady, always demonstrated by her enormous capacity to love. As her family grew, adding daughters and sons-in-laws, they deeply felt her acceptance of them, as did her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We love you Mom, and will greatly miss your love and warm smile. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Steinbach Mennonite Church, 345 Loewen Blvd, Steinbach. Interment at Heritage Cemetery. Viewing will be held on Friday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Haven Group Foundation (designated for Rest Haven Nursing Home), 177 Woodhaven Ave, Steinbach, MB, R5G 1K7
