Obituary of John M Dyck

Peacefully on May 7, 2008, John M Dyck, of Steinbach, passed away and went to be with his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, at the age of 94. He leaves in remembrance his children, Elizabeth Foster, Anne (Hubert) Beisel, John (Lois) Dyck, Harv (Sharon) Dyck, 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. He also leaves daughters-in-law Rita Dyck, Irene Dyck, and Bonnie Clement and sons-in-law William Friesen and Verne Sinclair. John was predeceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth (Lisa), son Ben, daughters Olga and Luella, sons-in-law Peter Hiebert and Garry Foster. John was born March 14, 1914, the only child of David W. and Anna Dyck. He worked very hard as a young boy growing up on a farm in Saskatchewan. Even though he did not receive an official education, John was self taught in reading and music. The instruments he learned to play were organ, violin, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, accordion and harmonica. Music was an important part of who he was and what he loved. He was overjoyed to know many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren inherited his gift and love of music. John’s interests included gardening, playing various board games, sewing on the sewing machine, and visiting with friends. He loved to read his Bible and pray. John married his childhood sweetheart, Elizabeth on July 27, 1933. He loved her dearly. Together they raised seven children and lived in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Paraguay, and Steinbach. He had various jobs throughout the years and retired from Buhler Versatile Inc. at the age of 65. Retirement was full and active for John as he was able to spend time with Lisa, travel and spend much time with friends. He was active until being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 83. Even then his life was marked with the attitude of gratitude. He was always so grateful for the things that others would do for him. John would often pat the staff on the hands, saying thank-you when they would tuck him in for the night. Even when Lisa and John were both in the Personal Care Home together and as Lisa was ill, John would gently touch her and pray with her. Our family would like to extend our appreciation to the Health Care team at Bethesda Place. Shelly supplied John with lots of hats. John loved his hats. Katie would sing those special songs with him in the early years at Bethesda. Thoughtful health care aids would give him those special treats that he so enjoyed. Thank you Chaplin Larry Hirst for the compassion and care that you extended to John. Thank you for being and advocate for John and all those with whom you come in contact with. Your voice and actions have been noticed and appreciated. The funeral service will be held at Bethesda Place, Steinbach, MB, on Tuesday May 13, at 10:00 am. Refreshments will be served immediately after the service by the family. Interment will take place at Heritage Cemetery.
