Obituary of Ronald John Hiebert

Ron Hiebert of Winnipeg, formerly of Steinbach, age 53, passed away at home on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013. Ron was born on April 5, 1960 to John Dyck and Elizabeth Hiebert. He is survived by his half-sisters Mary and Karen Dyck, a half-brother Chesley as well as his stepmother Joisie Dyck. He was predeceased first by his father and a by his mother a few years later. Ron grew up with his mother in Steinbach and graduated high school from the Steinbach Regional Secondary School. After high school he pursued his passion in computers and acquired a computer programming diploma at Herzing College. After many months of working part-time and full-time jobs, he landed a position at Statistics Canada by beating out dozens of applicants. He was on cloud nine and at a celebration dinner was quoted as saying, “I would pay them to work here.” After his position at Statistics Canada was moved to Western Canada, he was employed at Winnipeg School Division #1 where he invented many programs and provided technical support to help the school’s computer system operate more smoothly. Ron also had a passion for motorcycles so one summer he and Jack Rempel took a month off work and toured the US and Canada. Ron's best friend, Dudley was a long haul driver and they took many trips together. When Dudley tragically passed away in a winter blizzard, Ron was absolutely devastated. But I’m sure they're reminiscing about the good old days now. Ron also had a passion for anything that moved fast, especially the Indy car races and took great pains to record all of them. He had as many as three VCRs going at the same time to be sure he wouldn't miss anything. Ron’s other great passion was cooking. I would often get a call from him telling me a new culinary recipe he had found. Ron will always be remembered by his gentle soul and a zest for life. The funeral service will be held Monday, October 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba with burial to follow at Randolph Cemetery. Donations in Ron’s memory may be made to Union Gospel Mission, PO Box 1073, Stn. Main; Winnipeg., MB R3C 2X4.
