Jacob (Jake) Kornelsen Plett, aged 88 of Blumenort, Manitoba passed away peacefully on October 13, 2013 at the Rest Haven Nursing Home in Steinbach, Manitoba. He is survived by his loving wife Marie (nee Bartel) of almost 64 years, and their seven children: Marvin (Alviera), Eldin, Leroy (Liz), Wayne (Patsy), Eddy (Erna), Lynette, and Sharon (Sylvain Martel); eleven grandchildren: Barrette (Sandy), Rachel (Russ Friesen), Dale (Michelle), Kim (Steve Van Muyen), Ryan (Heather), Richelle, Sam (Tara), Tim (Tiffany), Nico, Yannick Martel and Jessica Martel; and twelve great grandchildren. Jake is also survived by four sisters: Tina Fast, Esther Petkau, Freda Schroeder, and Mary Friesen and three brothers: Thomas, Nick, and Abe and their families. Jake was predeceased by his parents Abram R. and Elizabeth Plett, two sisters Nettie and Lisa and brother Henry; his parents-in-law, Peter B. and Sarah Bartel of Meade, Kansas and sister-in-law Lena Friesen and brother-in-law Menno Bartel. Jake spent many years farming and working as a building construction contractor in the Blumenort, Chihuahua (Mexico) and Arborg areas. In later years he worked at various jobs in Steinbach and he and Marie served with the Evangelical Mennonite Conference working with Mennonites Mexico for seven years. Jake enjoyed woodwork and singing and was always an avid reader and conversationalist. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Friday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. with a celebration of Jake’s life to follow at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba. Private burial will take place prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
