Obituary of Herbert Barkman

MINISTER HERBERT H. BARKMAN Herbert Harold Barkman was born on February 16, 1917 in Steinbach, Manitoba to Jacob F. Barkman and Margaret Dyck Barkman. He peacefully passed away on November 5, 2013 at home, where he had been lovingly cared for by his daughter Hazel. He reached the age of 96 years. As a boy he worked on his father's farm in Steinbach, milking cows and delivering milk. He gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite in Greenland, MB on July 12, 1931. Dad was a very conscientious child of God and remained faithful to these vows until the end. During WW2, he served at an alternative service camp in Seebe, Alberta as a conscientious objector. He had many good memories of that time, and he enjoyed taking us all to visit that area many years later. He married Martha Bartel from Kleefeld on July 29, 1945. They shared 68 years together. His love and dedication to her were an example to us children. He was ordained to the ministry in Steinbach on April 15, 1949. They moved to Sinclair, Manitoba with their two boys in 1953, where he farmed and painted for a livelihood. Two daughters completed the family. Dad was often away during the winter as he helped with revival work, mostly travelling by bus and train. In the early 1980's they spent parts of several winters pastoring the congregation at Monterey, Tennessee. Later they filled in at the Beausejour, MB congregation for a time. Dad was always concerned for the spiritual welfare of his family and congregation. We knew that he sought first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and appreciate the heritage he passed on to us. Dad dearly loved singing. We took several family trips that remain a special memory. He also thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren. In the fall of 2004 they moved off the farm and back to Steinbach, settling into a condo on Stonebridge Crossing, built on the site of the family farm where Dad looked after the cows as a boy. Left to cherish fond memories are: his beloved wife, Martha; his children: Allen and Verna, Cromer, MB; Con and Mary, Swanson, Sask.; Hazel, Steinbach, MB; Viona and Doug Regehr, Bredenbury, Sask.; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; 2 brothers Roland and Gladwin (Irma); plus many nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents, one sister, three brothers, and a grandson Adrian Regehr. The funeral service for Herbert Barkman will be held Sunday, November 10, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, Steinbach, Manitoba. Viewing prior to the service. Interment to follow at Heritage Cemetery, Steinbach, Manitoba.
