EVA (FRIESEN) KORNELSON NEE UNGER "My journey started on July 7th 1929, born to Peter & Maria Unger, about six miles from Steinbach in the Bristol School district. We were a large family — 10 girls and one boy. Times were poor those days and I remember very vividly that as soon as we were able we shared the workload, pulling weeds or doing chores in the house. Later on it was working the land with horses, cultivating, harrowing, plowing, making hay, etc. It was hard work and I got my fill of farming in those days. At the age of almost 16, I decided I wanted to be baptized. For quite some time I'd been searching for spiritual answers. One Sunday I realized that I was a sinner and I needed Jesus to be my Savior. Shortly after that I was baptized on May 25, 1947 in the Randolph Chortitzer Church. At age 21, I started working at the P. B. Reimer store in Steinbach, which was a big shift. The workload was not so much easier but so different. It was there that I met my "prince charming" Sylvester Friesen, who rescued me from all those bosses and the many demands. We got married on July 5th 1953. I then joined the E.M.B. Church in Steinbach. To this marriage were born two girls and two boys — Shirley, Larry, Delbert & Gloria. In 1966, we moved to Winnipeg, because of job situations. Because money was always scarce, I learned to do a job called "Art Mending." It came in handy and I could do it at home while raising the children. I continued this work in Winnipeg. In Winnipeg, we joined the Christian Fellowship Chapel and became very involved there. We hadn't been in Winnipeg so very long when I came to know about Union Gospel Mission and the overwhelming needs in the inner city. Soon I was volunteering one day a week at the Christian Youth Center, working with women and children. In 1978 God called me to a full time position there. It was a big challenge but also very rewarding. I was there for almost seven years when my health broke down and I had to quit. Very much at the same time, Sylvester lost his job at the meat plant because the meat plant moved to Ontario. We struggled with job situations for about four years, when we decided about going into volunteer work. So in June of 1989, we went to Pennsylvania to work for M.C.C. First we signed up for two years, but that became four years. We came home in June 1993 and in April 1997 Sylvester went home to be with the Lord. I was alone for about 7 1/2 years. On October 16th, 2004 I married John Kornelson." Peacefully Eva Kornelson, 84, passed away at Rest Haven Nursing Home on November 19, 2013. Eva is survived by her second husband, John Kornelson; four children: Shirley Friesen, Lawrence Friesen, Del (Louise) Friesen, and Gloria Friesen; four grandchildren: Jeremy Friesen (Stephanie Raffard), Kristjan Anderson (Bonnie Timshel), Stephanie and Kendra Friesen. She is also survived by five sisters: Annie Reimer, Mary Giesbrecht, Alvina (Cornie) Wiebe, Elma Fuhr and Martha (George) Barkman; one brother Ben (Erna) Unger; one sister-in-law Tillie Buhr; John's children: Ron (Sue) Kornelson, Gordon (Becky) Kornelson, Mary (Abe) Hiebert, Agnes (Jac) Friesen, George (Chris) Kornelson, Marge (Gary) McLean and their children & grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Sylvester Friesen, her parents, four sisters: Sara Wiens, Dora MacNeil, Elizabeth Unger and Helen Barkman, and one brother Peter in infancy. Viewing will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. at Evangelical Fellowship Church, 200 Woodhaven Ave. Steinbach. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Evangelical Mennonite Church, 422 Main Street, Steinbach with interment at St. Vital Cemetery, Winnipeg in the afternoon.
