Obituary of Peter E Hildebrand

It is with peace in our hearts we say farewell to our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, the patriarch of our family. He was born to Jacob P. and Anna (Enns) Hildebrand February 12, 1922 in the village of Sommerfeld, MB the 4th of 12 children. At an early age he was given responsibilities that truly belonged to an adult. The burden of these responsibilities prepared him well for the many difficult situations he would encounter in life. At the age of 21 he began to think of seeking a life partner. It was a serious decision and he petitioned God to help find him a wife- he had some specific criteria. Very early in their courtship dad knew he would marry our mom, Agnes Wolfe. He was baptized in the spring of 1945 and married his beloved Agnes in August that same year. Their marriage spanned 38 years and was blessed with five children. He disciplined his children out of a deep love for them and a desire for the best for each one of them. He loved our mother ardently and missed her terribly after her passing. Some of the things dad impressed upon us included that every job be done well (there was no excuse for shoddy work), be punctual (if you’re not 10 minutes early consider yourself late), make repairs at the first sign of deterioration (don’t wait till it is broken), give without expectation of reward, trust that God would provide (which he did again and again), and to put family first (he took many a day off work to seek medical attention for his children). Dad worked at a variety of jobs over the years eventually becoming a journeyman mechanic. His work ethic, skill and unconventional methods of repairing cars, buses and tractors gained him quite the reputation. He worked at J. R. Friesen’s for 15 years and left the trade due to health concerns. After that he drove bus for the Hanover School Division for 17 years, retiring at 67 years of age. His tough love attitude was appreciated more by the parents than the children – but he made sure that every child on his bus should feel safe and be picked up on time every time. He particularly enjoyed the kindergarteners and had a soft spot in his heart for students with disabilities. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Agnes in 1984, daughter Elma in 2001, daughter -in-law Rita in 2008 and daughter Nettie in 2013, five sisters and three brothers. He leaves to miss him his children Susan (Larry) Loberg, Trudi (Osmond) Graham and Frank (Val) Hildebrand, 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters Helena Penner, Eva Schroeder and brother Henry. The family wishes to thank Dad’s many caregivers and volunteer visitors over the last few years. These visits were always a highlight and greatly appreciated. The funeral service for Peter E. Hildebrand will be held Saturday December 7th, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, with viewing prior to the service. Pastor Peter Rempel and Bishop Peter Heppner officiating. If friends so desire donations in Peter’s memory may be made to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1M3.
