Obituary of Fred Jaskiw

On Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at the age of 85, Fred Jaskiw passed away at the Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach. Fred was predeceased by his loving wife Marion, his parents Anton and Varvara, two sisters Nellie and Annie, and father-in-law John Golowaychuk. He is survived by his mother-in-law Justina, his uncle Steve and wife Irene Zulak, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Fred Jaskiw was born on October 2, 1928 in the village of Zhyrivske in the Zhydachiv district of the Lviv oblast. He attended school in his native village until the war broke out. In 1944, he was drafted into the Soviet army and made to serve on the Second Ukrainian front. He was then taken prisoner by the German army near the city of Sanok not far from the larger city of Peremyshl. In 1945, he was taken by the Americans to a refugee camp in Berchtensgaden. In 1948, he left for England to work in the mines, and later worked for four years in a textile factory. In 1952, he paid his way to Canada and ended up in Toronto. In 1955, he headed west. First he stayed at his aunt's place in Winnipeg and then made his home in Pansy. In winter he hauled boards from the sawmill to Winnipeg and in summer he worked on road construction. It was here in Pansy that he met Marion Golowaychuk and enjoyed married life with her from 1955 to 1981. After Marion's passing he remained living with his mother-in-law Justina enjoying each other's companionship He was an active member of the Ukrainian National Home of Pansy and a faithful parishioner of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul. Although he was a proud and patriotic Canadian, he remained forever true to his native country with numerous trips to Ukraine to visit his family. Fred's friends will serve as his pallbearers, John Kutowicz, Bill Bezditny, Dennis Wychnenka, Peter Bezditny, Danny Gresiuk, and George Friesen. Prayers will be said on Friday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Drive, Steinbach, Manitoba. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, Manitoba with Rev. Deacon Leon Twerdun officiating. Interment to follow at St. Peter and Paul's Parish cemetery, Pansy, Manitoba. Lunch to follow interment at the Pansy Hall, Pansy, Manitoba. Rest in Peace Vichnaya Pam' Yat
