Obituary of Susanna Doerksen

Early on the morning of Monday, April 04, 2011, our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother peacefully slipped into the welcoming arms of Jesus, her Savior and Lord, at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 25 days. Susanna was born on May 10, 1920 in the R.M. of Hanover to parents Gerhard and Katharina Neufeld. She was the oldest of five children. She was baptized upon the confession of her faith, and became a member of the Chortitzer Mennonite Church in Randolph. She married Jacob Doerksen on November 2, 1941, and they enjoyed 62 years of married life. Mom was a devoted wife and mother. In her younger years, she was a busy homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and baking while caring for the family. While Dad was away at work, she milked the cows, fed the chickens and pigs, looked after the sheep, etc. on their small hobby farm. After most of their seven children were grown, Mom and Dad opened up their home and cared for 33 foster children from 1973 to 1983. In her later years, Mom continued to knit slippers, mittens, scarves, etc. for her family and for others in need. Even now, there is still an unfinished scarf in her room. Mom had a strong faith in God to the very end. Thank you, Mom (and Grandma), for living unselfishly, and for praying for each one of us. We will remember your gentle spirit, your love for us, and your strong faith in Jesus Christ. Enjoy the rest that God is now giving you in the mansion He has prepared for you. Mom will be sadly missed by her seven children: Jake & Esther of Winnipeg, George & Sadie of Kenora, Kathy & Peter Penner of Mitchell, Henry & Geri of Winnipeg, Anita & John Funk of Grunthal, John & Dolores of Ile des Chenes, and Helen & Ken Klippenstein of Steinbach; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mom was predeceased by her husband, Jacob in 2004, one daughter, Susanna, in 1948, one great-grandson Bradey in 1996, her parents Gerhard and Katharina Neufeld, her sister Tina, and three brothers – Henry, Gerhard and David. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 6th at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional to follow at 7:30 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel on Thursday, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at the New Bothwell Sommerfeld Mennonite Church cemetery. The family would like to thank the Menno Home staff who showed such competent care, love and compassion to our Mother. Until we meet again. If friends so desire donations may be made to the Menno Home Foundation, Box 280; Grunthal, MB R0A 0R0
