Obituary of Helen Bergmann

Helen Bergmann of Steinbach, passed away Thursday, July, 17, 2008. She was born June 10, 1917 to Abram P. and Katherina Bergmann in Ruckenau, South Russia, the fourth of nine children. When Helen was 8 years of age the Bergmann family immigrated to Canada, settling on a farm near Steinbach. After moving several times, the sandpit farm near Ste. Anne became home. At the age of 20, Helen was baptized upon her confession of faith, and joined the Steinbach Mennonite Brethren Church. Helens career life was varied, spending many years working in Winnipeg as a receptionist for Dr. Neufeld and Dr. Derksen. During this time she took some evening courses. A huge accomplishment for Helen was getting her drivers license and buying a car. She enjoyed her years working in Winnipeg, and built lifelong friendships during that time. After the death of her father in 1971, Helen moved back to Steinbach where she worked at the local hospital. During this time she cheerfully took care of her aging mother and older sister Mary. Her life verse was Colossians 3:23 “And whatever you do, do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men”. Helen treasured her past and placed sentimental value on the many items and family heirlooms that passed through her hands. Family was important to Helen. She looked forward to and enjoyed visits and family gatherings. Helen never had children of her own, but has been known as ‘Tante Lena’ to many nieces and nephews, and later to her great nieces and nephews. She had a special place in her heart for each one of them. Her uncanny ability to spot a four leaf clover in a field of grass holds a special memory for many of the young people that had the pleasure of spending time with her in the great outdoors. Every summer her garden on Lumber Avenue was bursting with colorful varieties of flowers and a bounty of fruit trees and vegetables. She loved going for rides and seeing Gods beauty in nature. Helen had a quick wit, played a mean game of scrabble - and loved to win. Helen is survived by one brother George (Esther); sisters Betty (John) Goertzen and Anne Froese; sisters-in-law Helen and Margaret, 29 nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by 3 brothers Abe, Henry and Peter, 2 sisters Sara and Mary; sister-in-law Anne Bergmann; brothers-in-law George Froese and Jake Giesbrecht and 2 nephews. The family wishes to thank the homecare workers for the care and compassion they have provided to Helen. Viewing will be held at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, 150 Penfeld Dr, Steinbach on July 20 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held Monday, July 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Mennonite Brethren Church, 340 2nd St, Steinbach, with burial at the Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Life Network, 225 Riverton Ave, Wpg, MB R2L 0N1 or Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
