Obituary of Jacob Warkentin

Peacefully at Grace Hospital at the age of 84 years. Dad will be sadly missed by son Wayne, son Jerry and Karen and numerous other family members. Jake was predeceased by his wife Evelyn in 1999, his sisters Elsie and Margaret and his brother John. Jake was born in Tiegenhagen, Russia & immigrated to Canada when he was one year old. At 18 years of age he enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders & spent four years overseas during W.W. II. He came back to Canada & married the love of his life, Evelyn in 1948. Jake spent 28 years of his working life as a Hudson’s Bay Co. delivery driver until his retirement to help Evelyn open Nitro News in 1976. Jake was an accomplished vocalist performing with Milt Young as the “The Blue Boys” at various venues in Winnipeg. Throughout his life he was an avid & competitive sportsman playing fastball, hockey, curling, golf & snowmobiling. Jake had a great love for the outdoors & in 1985 Jake & Evelyn purchased a cabin on Bird River, where they loved to entertain family & friends. Jake never met an animal that didn’t like him and people were always drawn to his good nature & humorous personality. Service will be held at Callsbeck Fellowship Chapel, 1445 Callsbeck, Wpg on Thursday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing prior to the service. Cremation to follow and ash interment at a later date. We consider all family and friends as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jake’s name may be to The Salvation Army, 203 - 290 Vaughan Street, Winnipeg, MB R3B 2N8
