Obituary of Mary Schellenberg

Peacefully on August 27, 2008 on her 86th birthday Mom went home to her Lord and Saviour. Left to cherish her memory are her children Bob, Grace (Harry)Schmidt, Jim (Judith), Dave (Lil), Henry (Terry), 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren, one brother, three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. She was predeceased by her husband Bishop Henry K. Schellenberg on August 6, 1990, one brother, three sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Mom was born on August 27, 1922 to Abram and Susan Rempel. Her mother passed away when Mom was only 3 years old. Her dad never remarried so she was raised by a grandmother and aunts. When Mom was 12 her grandmother passed away and she was left in charge of the household which included her father, 2 brothers and several uncles. In the spring of 1940 she, together with Dad was baptized upon the confession of her faith in Jesus Christ. On September 22, 1940 they were married and had almost 50 years together. They complimented each other well and Mom thought the time together had been much too short. Mom was always a very caring mother and was very proud of her family. With limited funds she managed to feed and clothe us well. She was a good cook and seamstress. She didn't ask for much and one of her favorite sayings was “Everything comes to him who waits" and she was willing to wait. When Dad was called into the ministry she was there supporting him in whatever way she could. She had the gift of hospitality and found great pleasure in entertaining family and friends and cooking for them. She looked forward to church members coming from Saskatchewan and BC, having them over for meals and as overnight guests. Dad was kept busy shopping for flour as many of the buns she baked made their way into our homes. She will also be remembered for her great pies that were one of her favorite things to bake. When she was still able she would be outside early in spring doing the yard work she loved. Until her last hospital stay she was still in the house that Dad had built for them 60 years ago. Mom felt honoured that after Dad passed away the ministerial still included her in functions that were of interest to her. Mom's heart condition was diagnosed around 1988. She had bypass surgery in 1994 and enjoyed reasonably good health for the next 10 years. Her last years were a struggle and she longed to go to her heavenly home and be with Dad. On her many lonely, sick days she held fast to the bible verse found in Joshua 1:5 "I will never leave you nor forsake you". We appreciated the home care staff that cared for her so lovingly and took the time to visit with her. Special thanks to the pastors and other visitors that came to encourage her in the hospital. Also thanks to Dr. Kaetler and the Bethesda Hospital staff who looked after her with compassion. Viewing will be at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. with a devotional at 7:30 p.m. and at the church prior to the service. The funeral service will be held Saturday, August 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chortitzer Mennonite Church, 479 Hanover St, Steinbach with interment at Heritage Cemetery.
